NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WECT) – The Humane Society of the United States and the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust are offering a reward of $2,500 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for harming more than 100 pelicans.

Since November, Volunteers and investigators have found about 150 brown pelicans that were deliberately killed, mostly in North Topsail Beach.

"We applaud the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other investigating agencies for their efforts to find those who may be responsible," said Kimberley Alboum, North Carolina state director for The HSUS in a press release.

The birds have been slashed, bludgeoned and even shot. Maliciously maiming an animal is a felony in North Carolina and pelicans are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

If caught, the individual(s) responsible could face a number of violations of state and federal law.

Anyone with information about this case should contact U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Special Agent Sandra Allred at (919) 856-4786.
