Fisherman's Post Fishing Report Winter 2014 / 2015

Fisherman's Post fishing report:

John Bullock, Becky Early, and Chuck Johnson with a haul of king mackerel they landed while trolling dead cigar minnows under Blue Water Candy skirts near AR-366.

Chris, of East Coast Sports, reports that there’s been some excellent speckled trout fishing around Topsail over the past few weeks. Anglers are still catching a few while working MirrOlures and soft plastic baits from the beachfront, with the best fishing around slough and sandbar edges. The trout bite has been excellent inshore, and anglers are finding the fish in creeks and backwaters off the ICW and New River (with good numbers of citation fish off the river). Soft plastic baits and suspending lures like MirrOlure MR17’s are the best bets for the trout. Red drum are in many of the same areas inshore and will pounce on the same artificials as the specks. Anglers may also see schools of reds feeding around the shoals of Topsail and other local inlets over the winter months, and they can cast Gulps, spoons, and other lures to fish they spot to hook up. Black drum are still feeding around inshore structure and in the surf zone. Anglers are hooking them in both places with fresh shrimp pinned to bottom rigs. The inshore drum are often around and feeding through the wintertime. Flounder giggers are still finding plenty of success, but cooler water seems to have slowed the flatfish bite for hook and line anglers.

Out in the ocean, there have been big numbers of gray trout feeding at nearshore structure like Divers and Dallas rocks. Jigging lures like Stingsilvers are tough for the grays to turn down, and they’ll also pounce on a variety of natural baits.Allen, of Breadman Ventures, reports that anglers are still seeing some solid red drum and speckled trout action around Sneads Ferry right now, and they should have some opportunities at both fish all winter long.
Some large (to 8+ lbs.) specks are feeding in shallow water in the creeks and bays off the New River, and anglers can tempt the fish to bite suspending baits like MR17 MirrOlures or TTF and Salty Bay soft plastic baits pinned to light jigheads.
Red drum are feeding in many of the same areas and still providing plenty of sight-fishing action for anglers chasing them. Searching for wakes, pushes, and other “nervous water” can clue anglers in to the presence of a school of reds from a distance, and anglers can often spot individual fish to cast to once they get closer. Soft plastics and suspending hard baits will fool the reds as well as the trout.
Robin, of Jolly Roger Pier, reports that anglers are still seeing some action from the pier, primarily while bottom-fishing with shrimp and Fish Bites. Croaker and black drum have made up most of the catch lately, but anglers also saw some sea mullet and pufferfish last week as well. The panfish action should remain decent for much of the month if the temperatures don’t fall too far.
There’s been a decent speckled trout bite off the pier over the past month, but the fish have gotten smaller (most undersized) in recent weeks. Artificial lures like curly tail grubs will attract attention from the trout. Allen, of Breadman Ventures, reports that anglers are still seeing some solid red drum and speckled trout action around Sneads Ferry right now, and they should have some opportunities at both fish all winter long.

Rained Out

I woke up early today about 5 am. The rain had finally stopped, so I decided to hit the beach and throw a mirro-lure for a while, which turned out to be a very short while. The ocean was beautiful, and very angry. Huge waves and white water!  After a few minutes the rain came back so I grabbed my bucket and headed to the truck. On the access steps the bottom fell out. Long story short, I got soaked, with water even getting in my waders.

As I read the morning report from Surf City Pier today, I was thinking how I would miss their morning video report after they close. I would like to thank the folks at Surf City Pier for their morning report. I am going to miss starting my day without the SC Pier report each morning. But they will be back in March to keep us informed.

A note: Surf City Pier will be closing in a few days so if you haven't already, get your 2015 Season Pass before they close. The speckled trout will be around all the way to December something, and you can't get on the pier after they close unless you have a key, so don't procrastinate.

Visit the Surf City Pier website (http://www.surfcityoceanpier.com/) or their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/surfcitypier) to get their morning report.

Till  next time....

Topsail/Sneads Ferry Fishing Reports

Bonita Rogers Miller, of Jacksonville, NC, with a fat speckled trout that bit a Carolina-rigged finger mullet in the New River near downtown Jacksonville.

Michelle and Melissa Cherry with Michelle’s first dolphin, a cow that bit a ballyhoo behind a black/red chugger 35 miles off Topsail Inlet while they were fishing with Tim Powell on the “Timtation.”

Jackson Wright (age 8) holds an 8.2 lb. sheepshead that bit a live finger mullet near some inshore structure at Surf City. Weighed in at East Coast Sports.

D.J., of East Coast Sports, reports that there’s been an excellent speckled trout bite in the New River in recent days, and anglers are fooling the fish on topwater plugs, suspending hard baits like MirrOlure MR17’s, soft plastics, and live baits.
Red and black drum are feeding along the ICW, on the flats, and around structure like docks. Anglers can tempt the reds to bite live baits or a variety of artificials, with shrimp and fiddler crabs as top choices for the black drum.
Flounder fishing inshore has also been excellent lately, with good numbers of fish coming from inshore structure and the creeks.
The flounder bite has been solid in the ocean as well, where the fish are feeding around nearshore rocks, ledges, and artificial reefs. Live baits will work in the ocean, but Gulp baits pinned to bucktail jigs can be even more effective.
Spanish mackerel and bluefish are feeding just off the beachfront, and anglers are hooking both while working casting lures from the piers and trolling Clarkspoons and other shiny offerings from boats.
Not many reports have come in from offshore lately, but there is still a decent dolphin bite for boats making the run to the Gulf Stream.

Cathy, of East Coast Sports, reports that surf casters are hooking some red and black drum, bluefish, spot, and croaker along the island’s beachfront. Shrimp are fooling most of the fish.
Some spanish mackerel and bluefish are feeding just off the beaches, and anglers are hooking them while working Gotcha plugs from the piers and trolling Clarkspoons from boats.
Several king mackerel have been landed from the island’s piers over the past week, so boaters should be able to target them fairly close to land right now. Live baits like menhaden and bluefish are the way to go for the kings.

Craig Henshall, of New Bern, with a 28 lb. wahoo he hooked 20 miles off New River Inlet while fishing with Guy Pepper on the "Minnow."

Chris, of East Coast Sports, reports that some large sheepshead (fish to 11 lbs. recently) and black drum are feeding around area bridge and dock pilings. Anglers are hooking both on shrimp and fiddler crabs fished tight to the structure.
Red drum action remains hot in the sound, where anglers are finding the fish feeding in the creeks and marshes. They’ve been biting topwater plugs very well recently, and anglers can also cast spoons, soft plastic baits, or live and cut baits with success.

Prescription Fishing Sunglasses, Oakley and More

I ran across these sunglasses on the web. They look great and I can't wait to try them. Check these out. I think you will want to try them also.
Thanks,
Johnny aka "Fishin'Topsail"

Prescription Fishing Sunglasses

Prescription Fishing Sunglasses are now available with an updated lens design focused on the specific needs of an angler. The angler specific lens technology provides a larger portion of the reading corridor for near vision, like baiting a hook. The angler progressive lens is a stark contrast to a traditional progressive lens that has a focal distance that gets progressively  closer as you look lower in the lens. A traditional progressive lens design provides a very small portion of the lens near vision. Designing more of the lens to focus on the specific needs of anglers allows for more head movement while keeping near objects in focus.

Fishing Sunglasses with this prescription lens design,
based on recent Free-Form Digital lens technology, recalculates the curve of a lens at every point e lens. This eliminates the peripheral distortion referred to as the “fishbowl effect”. The upper portion of a Free-Form Digital lens provides the sharpest distance vision possible, while the bottom of the lens provides a near-vision portion that is perfect for fishermen.

Prescription Oakley Sunglasses are the first to market with this new lens design. Oakley also offers the largest selection of polarized lens colors designed for a fishing environment. The Oakley Shallow Blue Iridium lens is a polarized bronze lens with an oxide coating to minimize blue light distortions. The Oakley Deep Blue Iridium lens is a polarized grey lens with the same coating. The combination of the fishing-specific prescription lens design and polarized lens colors designed specifically for fishing has made Oakley a top pick for serious anglers.

ADS Sports Eyewear is one of the first Authorized Oakley dealers to focus on the new angler-specific lenses, which are available for any of the Oakley frames you find on the ADS website. The company is optician owned and operated with a knowledgeable staff that uses and understands prescription eyewear for active people and will answer any questions you might have about the new Angler-Specific lenses.

6th Annual Children’s Fishing Competition and Celebration at Surf City Pier

Surf City Ocean Pier Inc.

We will be hosting our 6th Annual Children’s Fishing Competition and Celebration on Friday, July 4, 2014. This event is free and is open to all children under the age of 16 whom are local or visiting our quiet little island. This will expose these youngsters to the excitement of fishing in a fun, educational, and safe family oriented environment.
Our first five years have been such a huge success, that we are now in need of donors and donations for our event. For the past five years, we have had the honor of Pender EMS and the local Volunteer Fire Departments on site to ensure that the children have a fun and safe celebration. We have also been fortunate enough to offer all the children a Fishing Competition and Celebration t-shirt in addition to other fabulous gifts and prizes that have been donated from area businesses, private individuals, and various fishing wholesale distributors. This year looks to be even bigger and better than in years past.
We here at Surf City Ocean Pier, Inc. could use your help with this increasingly successful event. As this event continues to we are looking for both volunteers and sponsors. Monetary donations and/or donations of merchandise are always greatly appreciated. With your contribution to our competition/celebration, children from near and far will have a wonderful fun filled day at Surf City Ocean Pier. Your support will be greatly appreciated with our endeavors of the day that will be ahead of us on July 4, 2014.
There are currently twelve spots available for sponsors who donate $100 or more, to have their name or logo added to the children's t-shirts. Volunteers will also be needed to help supervise, answer questions, cut bait, identify fish and teach fishing basics to our young anglers, as well as help with serving lunches. For some of the children, this will be their very first fishing experience, and we hope to make it a memory that will last a lifetime.
I would like to invite you to come out and celebrate with us and be part of this special day here on the island. If you feel that you are able to help us in our mission, please feel free to contact me via email at pier_witch@yahoo.com or via phone at the Surf City Ocean Pier 910-328-3521.
Sincerely,
Vinita Gass
