Hello from Surf City! I talked to a fishing friend, Ann, today and she caught some sea mullets last night at Surf City Pier. She also landed a big, (almost two pound) mullet and a speckled trout that weighed in at over a pound. Good job Ann! I am still hearing of a few drum and specks near the inlets, and small flounder, sea mullets, and undersize flounder coming from the surf and piers.

Till next time....

Tarpon!

Bass Pro Shops

Hello from Surf City!
Big Tim at Surf City Pier has landed a monster 60 lb tarpon while fishing for king mackerel. Congrats Tim, Good Job! A king was lost when it wrapped up around a pier piling. A few spanish were caught yesterday, along with one four pounder caught on a grub and jig! Bottom fishing continues to be slow, with anglers landing a few of everything including spots, blues, mullets, and croakers. It was rumored that one nice speckled trout was caught from Surf City Pier Thursday, but I haven't been able to confirm. Rain canceled most surf fishing this afternoon as several small storms blew in with lots of thunder and lightning. Surf fishing remains slow, with a few spots, small mullets, croakers and undersize flounder. Larger keeper flounder, slot puppy drum, and speckled trout have been caught near the inlets, but not in numbers. Inshore is a little better, with puppy drum being caught under the piers and docks during low tide fishing grubs and spinners, and along grass lines during high tide on top water lures.

Till next time....

Rod-Man Report

Bass Pro Shops

Hello from Surf City!
Hi Folks,
Busy is not the word and I am sorry I have been less than punctual with my reports. As always, I will try to do better. This has been a very unusual year thus far. From the lack of flounder inside to the abundance of king macks in close, things have just been different. Nevertheless, I am happy to report that fishing is very good and there are definitely some hot spots. Now here's my report:

Inshore: The hot fish right now is the redfish. We are catching nice reds in the 20 to 27+ inch range up the creeks and in the waterway. Best bait has been menhaden, dead or alive...it doe not matter. I use 20# Fireline by Berkley and a 50-80# leader and 1.5 to 2 oz. egg sinker with a 2/0 wide bend hook fished carolina rig style. I use Okuma VS 45 reels for these fish and the smooth drag and toughness of these reels really help with landing these brutes. A few flounder are being caught; some are small and some are nice size. They are just flat unpredictable as to where and when they will bite. Finally, some big bluefish are being caught in the waterway and creeks, blues up to 6 and 7 pounds...I told you it was an unusual season.

Near shore: The spanish bite is pretty good right now and some of the fish are very nice size...3-5 pounds. Best methods are trolling with planers and using clarkspoons and when it is calmer use a bird rig on top. Some tarpon have shown, but large live baits have become scarce which makes this fishing a challenge. The shrimp boats are not running yet so the shark fishing is not happening for the time being.

Offshore: From 4 to 10 miles, king mackerel fishing is hot hot hot. Live bait, cigar minnows, ballyhoo...it doesn't seem to matter. Mahi and sails are also close in and do not be surprised if you get one or both of these popular fishes while king mack fishing.

Gulfstream: The heat of the summer seems to cool off the gulfstream fishing a bit. Fish very early in the morning for mahi (large size) and fish deep for wahoo. Billfish are active as well.

I am in the process of finalizing plans for the 2oo8 version of the Rod-Man Fishing Schools to be held in Raleigh and Wilmington. Look for a new all-star cast of speakers and new and expanded topics. More details will be available soon.

Enjoy the fishing, be safe and courteous on the water, and....

Let's Go Fishing!!!

COASTAL NEWS
Fisheries officials eyeing limited entry
BY SUSAN WEST | OBX SENTINEL STAFF

The North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission (MFC)
plans to continue a discussion on limited access
privilege programs when they meet in Pine Knoll Shores in
September.
Sometimes called individual fishing quotas, limited
access privilege programs (LAPPs) are the linchpin in
management programs that use the tenets of economic
efficiency to reorganize fisheries.
Under LAPPs, the total annual harvest quota for a
species is divided into quota shares that are granted to
individual fishermen, corporations or associations

Marine Fisheries concerned over dwindling access
By Mike Shutak
CARTERET NEWS-TIMES
RALEIGH — The N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission (MFC)
wants the General Assembly to address the public’s
diminishing access to coastal waters before the
situation gets any harder to resolve.
The MFC has written a letter encouraging action on 27
suggested measures to support working waterfronts and
public water access.
The letter says that while the MFC appreciates the
number and variety of issues the General Assembly faces
during this legislative session, it believes immediate
legislative action is needed to begin the process of
addressing the loss of working waterfront and public
access along the state’s shoreline. According to the
MFC’s letter, the longer the state waits to take
action, the more costly it will be to remedy the problems
of accelerating non-waterfront-dependent development
and increasing real property taxes.

Emerald Isle Bridge: DOT opposes ramp
By ANNITA BEST
Tideland News Writer
Boaters looking for access to Bogue Sound at foot of
the B. Cameron Langston Bridge may be out of luck, but
the project’s proponent has vowed to continue to
work for it.
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission wants to build
a 175-parking space facility on the Cedar Point side
of NC 58. During hearings on the proposal, the plans
met resistance from those who believe the location is
unsafe from a traffic standpoint.
Now, the N.C. Department of Transportation has told
the WRC it isn’t willing to concede the land, set
aside for a future high-rise bridge, for the ramp.
“The right of way was purchased when the bridge was
built in the 70s,” said John Rouse, Division
Maintenance Engineer for NC DOT Division 2. “That means the
state bought the property from the owners. The state
didn’t want them to have access to that particular
roadway. This was done for a safety and mobility
standpoint.”

Hello from Surf City!
Fishing report from NC Waterman

Oregon Inlet Fishing Center
July 11 REPORT

Offshore a lot of dolphin in most of today's catches.
Many included several yellow fin tunas and one boat
had a 3 big eyes. They weighed 74, 78 and 100 pounds
each. They also had a wahoo and a gaffer dolphin. I had a
problem with my camera. The lense protector only
opened part way on most of the pictures I took. The
typical large number of dolphins are missing. All in all it
was a good day, warm and breezy. The prospect for
tommorrow is less breezt.

Inshore King mackerel morning and afternoon. Open
boats- different boats did diferent things. One went after
sharks and blue fish, another flounders and another
blue fish.

July11 Report

Surf fishing reports for yesterday and today include
plenty of sea mullet and pompano, bluefish, a couple of
flounder, a few puppy drum, and several black drum.
We have thunderstorms moving through this morning and
it has slowed downed the fishermen getting out but we
really needed the rain if nothing else to pack the
beach back down. South point is currently closed today as
an American Oystercatcher hatched yesterday and has
stayed on the oceanside. The NPS is suppose to be sending
down a team to provide a bypass road around the bird
to be able to allow access to the point so check with
the Park service or here for updates on the opening.
Steve Moff of Williamsport, PA had a nice puppy drum
caught with mullet on Sunday afternoon and was nice
enough to come by for a photo. Gary and Matt Armour of
Elkton, MD caught Spanish mackerel at the point on glass
minnows before the closure yesterday. Ashley Wiley of
Earleville, MD had a nice pompano yesterday. Jason
Beck was nice enough to share his photo from the "Miss
Teresa" of Jim Bryant, Kandace and Jeff Norman with
some of their catch of spanish and bluefish.
Have fun fishing!

Offshore: The offshore fishing continues to be good.
There are still good numbers of dolphin everywhere you
go offshore. There were more wahoo caught this past
week than the week before. From inshore of the 14 Bouy
to offshore of the Big Rock the dolphin fishing is
good, as well as some wahoo and sailfish. Sailfish and
white marlin sre still being caught in good numbers with
the occasonial blue marlin mixed in.

Inshore: The fishing inshore this past week had slowed
up some over last week. there are still king mackerel
being caught around the Barge Wreck and the Sea Bouy
as well as the Beaufort Inlet, but not in the numbers
that there were last week. There are still dolphin
being caught around the Sea Bouy but their numbers have
dropped some as well. There are kings and dolphin
around the Northwest Places, Big Ten Little Ten area as
well as around the 13 and Hutton area. The inshore shark
fishing is still very good both just off the beaches
around the trawlers and back inside Shackleford Banks
and around Cape Lookout shoals.

Inside: The drum fishing inside the marshes has slowed
up some due to dirty water. We managed to catch a few
drum on fly and conventional spin the past Friday.
The speckled trout fishing has been pretty gppd in the
marsh as well. Cleaner water will help tremendously.
Just as soon as it clears up some boht the drum and
speckled trout will really get good.

Piers: The piers are catching Spanish mackerel,
flounder, sea mullet blues and black drum.

Charters: We are now booking for red drum, speckled
trout, king mackerel, sharks and dolphin

[NorthCarolinaPierFishing] Fishing Recap for the NC Coast for the week of 7/12/07

Hello from Surf City!

Here is a fishing report from Al at North Carolina Fishing Pier Society.
Ok, with 8 days to go, as predicted, the fishing has slowed. But there
is something about a bad day fishing is better then a good day working
and that is true.

Offshore - Dolphin, wahoo and yellowfin, with Kings and Spanish closer
to shore. Scattered black drum, blues, flounder, pompano, red drum and
whiting from the surf and piers. Some kings and sheepshead as well.

If I had to quess I would say the piers at Topsail and Oak Island and
leading with kings from what I can tell. At Yaupon this week a guy got
a 130 pound Tarpon and a 30 pound king on the same day. Now that is a
pretty fair day.

Thanks to Al for this report. Check out the NC Fishing Pier Society website to see how you can help save our vanishing fishing piers.

King Mackerel are chewing!!!-Current Adventure Charters

The King Mackerel bite is really starting to turn on. The Dolphin bite is slacking off, but the Kings are picking up the slack. We have caught fish up to 30lbs this past week, with a lot of teenage fish being caught. The good news is the best bite seems to be within 10 miles of the beach, which may explain the lack of Dolphin bites this past week.

Sailfish is the other big news this week. More and more are being reported caught and released with most being caught within 20 miles of the beach and the majority being caught within 10 miles of the beach. I have a trip lined up for this weekend just to target the illusive Sail, so wish me luck!!

Inshore, the flounder bite continues to get better and the redfish are chewing, if you can find them. There are plenty of Spanish Mackerel to be caught just off the beach.
The fishing continues to be great and it has been one of the best seansons for Kings, Sails and Dolphin that we have had in a long time.

Call today to book your trip.

Fishing Recap for the NC Coast for the week of 7/5/07

Bass Pro Shops

Hello from Surf City!
Thanks to Al at North Carolina Pier Fishing Society for this holiday week fishing report! Keep 'em coming Al!

Here is hoping everyone had a great and safe 4th of July. Fishing
remains good along the coast.

Offshore - Dolphin in abudance with Wahoo, Sailfish, Kings and
spadefish, spanish at the wrecks.

Blues, croaker, flounder, pompano, big pompano, puppies, specs, reds,
and sheepshead in the surf and at most piers. This is the first week in
a while the Observer is not reporting big drum at Ocracoke.

Jack is contemplating a trip to Holden/Oak Island area and they are
still catching a lot of fish there including big pompano. I hope Jack
goes and gives a full report. I have a funeral this weekend or I would
be considering making a quick trip as well.

Johnny is reporting mullets, croaker spot and improving flounder
fishing at Topsail with puppies at the inlets.

Only 15 days until I am on Hatteras for a full week.

Best way to keep shrimp alive?

Bass Pro Shops

Hello from Surf City! The following appeared in the NC Waterman Message Boards. It's interesting, and I thought I would share.

Best way to keep shrimp alive?

What's the best way to keep shrimp alive? Seems like I've heard something about a cooler with ice, then newspaper and then shrimp on top? Any tips? Thanks and have a safe 4th.

Water and and a BIG BUBBLES!!!!!!!!

How long are you gonna keep them? If you've got 'em today and you're gonna use 'em today, a bucket of water and a good bubble maker are all you need. If you're gonna keep them longer...the same setup will work, but you're gonna need to change the water a few times a day and you will certainly want to keep the temperature in check. Don't leave 'em out in the sun! For that matter you can just keep them in the house...just be sure to change that water! Jay

Something that I've always done with live shrimp is to sink a piece of mesh or something rigid that they can hold on to. Especially important in a live well. This keeps them from getting swept around and thrown into the sides of the bucket or tank....one of the main reasons live shrimp die out when kept as bait.

I used to fish live shrimp quite a bit on the Texas coast. We would buy them just before going fishing for about $5 per quart. I used a Flow Troll bait bucket with an aerator that clipped to the bucket. We usually wade fished with the bait bucket tied to us so we removed the aerator and got the bucket in the water asap. Kept the shrimp alive quite well however, if you leave them in the heat very long they will die quickly even with aeration in a bait bucket until you get the bucket in the big water. More water and a lot of bubbles will likely be the key to keeping them alive.

If you have them in the live well with tons of circulation, then I might would worry about putting something in there for them to hold on to. If you are just using a bubbler with no water circulation it isn't needed. Jay

Croakers on the James River!

Bass Pro Shops

Hello from Surf City!

"My brother in law and I ventured to James River today. We put in at hunington park, could not believe the ramp had only about 20 vehicles there. We caught about 200 or so kept 100 to feed the ones who are not able to fish anymore. Great day on the River and seen my first Submarine surface ,That was cool. Navy Patrol boats were every where.

North Carolina Anglers, The above quote appeared in the NC Waterman Message Board. Why can't we catch croakers like this in North Carolina? Is is because of the netting laws in N.C.? Can anyone tell me? Just a thought.

Reds in Surf at Topsail Beach!

Go REAL Big - NASCAR cars and drivers at Fathead

Hello from Surf City! Got a report today that there have been some reds, or puppy drum, caught in the surf near the New Topsail Inlet. Report says finger mullets were the bait, fished on a fish finder rig. Spanish and small blues have been caught on the area piers recently, most in the early morning. Haven't heard about any kings this week. Small sea mullets in the surf and piers, with a few spots and croakers from the piers. The flounder bite is picking up with several keepers being caught from the piers. The flounder bite in the inside waters continues to improve. No specks to report anywhere this week. I have seen several large schools of pogies int he surf this week. This is always a welcome sight. Finger mullets are showing up in the creeks and waterways, as is pogies.
