Wind Still Wrong

The wind is still out of the SW and pretty strong, 15 to 20, the ocean water temperature at Topsail Island is in the middle to low 70's, and fishing is slow. The early morning is bringing a few blues and spanish from the piers, and a few pompano, black drum and flounder from the piers and surf. The speckled trout should have started showing up in numbers by now, but I haven't heard much about them. Nighttime fishing is slow, with a few sharks and small sea mullets. With winds forecast to change Thursday to NNE, and then E Friday, maybe the fish will move back in and fishing will improve. I will watch it closely and let you know. Sand fleas have been hard to find, but they are there. I have found them about 8 to 10 inches deep from five to seven feet from the max high tide line. They are easiest to find on a rising tide, as the wave action is washing some of the sand from the fleas. Best to dig your fleas early then fish near high tide for the large mullet, black and red drum. If you are looking for the bigger florida pompano, try casting to the sandbars baited with a sandflea.

We are waiting for the wind to change, and blow the schools of spots and mullets inshore. So, check the weather, and look for the NE wind, which will produce best on Topsail Island this time of year.
