Topsail Island Update
Hello from Surf City! Small spanish and blues off Surf City Pier this week, along with two kings landed. Large pompano (up to 3 lbs) are hitting sand fleas and cut shrimp, and a few specks on live shrimp and grubs. At night when it's cooler, a few spots are starting to hit on short runs of 30 minutes or so. The sea mullet bite is picking up at night on fresh shrimp and sand fleas.
On Sea View pier, lots and lots of spanish are hitting diamond jig rigs bounced off the bottom, but most are under the 12 inch minimum. Some nice blues are biting gotcha plugs and hitting bottom rigs baited with cut bait. A couple of nice trout have been reported, and one 5 or 6 pounder was brought to the top of the water, but couldn't be landed with the dip net. Sea View also reported some big spade fish and a few keeper flounder. A few spots and sea mullets at night.
The surf is giving up a few flounder, and red drum, and even some (wait for it, here it comes.....) spanish are being jigged up from just behind the breakers. Boats are catching kings up to 10 lbs about 50 yards from shore. Inside is still producing some reds in the shallows and along grass lines, and speckled trout near the inlets and in the mouth of deep water tidal creeks.
Go gettum!
Till next time....
Tight lines!
