Topsail Island Fishing

Hello everyone, Sorry I haven't posted recently. I have had a killer migraine and out of commission. I am feeling some better today. Thanks for the emails. I talked to some friends today, and fishing is not dead, as sometimes happens this year, but it has slowed a bit. It seems that when surf fishing and pier fishing gets slow, the fishing on the inside gets better. That is the case now. There are huge schools of red drum patroling the flats off the ICW. Live bait producing better, but the will hit artificials. Look for them in the flats along grasslines and around oyster beds. The speckled trout are holed up in the deep tidal creeks awaiting cooler water. The are hitting live shrimp, but not much else. There seems to be lots of them in the New River area. The flounder bite is picking up a bit, fish for them under docks and around bridge pilings. If you don't have access to a boat, there are a couple of thiongs that can make your surf or pier fishing trip better. Early mornings is the best time, with late evenings a closre second. There is almost nothing being caught mid day. So get out there early before the crowds show up. Sand fleas are the bait of choice for mullets and pompanos. Live shrimp are catching some keeper flounder around the piers. Speckled trout are scarce, but live shrimp is catching a few. And don't forget the summer spots, some anglers are catching a good number, if you can stay out for awhile. Fish bites, and fresh cut shrimp are the bait. Gotcha plugs and cut mullet are getting some blues, but just a few. There are still a few kings and tarpon showing up from time to time, but be prepared to wait a bit for the bite. There was a nice sixty pound tarpon caught at Surf City Pier last week. The staff at the turtle hospital here on the island was glad to get the cut up tarpon for their sick and injured turtles. That is about it for now. I will post as I hear more.

Till next time....
