The fishing off the S.E. North Carolina coast continues to be incredible. The weather is hot, but the fish are still biting. Tatics have had to change, but we still continue to catch fish.
Slow trolling live bait is the key to catching King Mackerel now. With the water temperatures high, the fish are deep and not very willing to chase a fast moving bait, so live bait is key. Cigar minnows, sardines, and menhaden are all great baits and will produce nice King Mackerel.
There are large schools of big Spanish Mackerel around as well. Try light lining finger mullet or small menhaden on very light wire and a #6 treble hook for some great action on citation size fish!!
The nearshore Sailfish bite has just been insane!!! I hooked my first Sailfish of the season this past Saturday, but it was a short lived effort, as the Sail wrapped my light mono around his bill and snapped the 20lb rather easily. Despite my misfortune, it has not been uncommon to hear multiple boats on the radio hooking up and releasing Sails almost daily. We are expieriencing the best Sailfish bite in the Topsail Beach area that we have had in years. I can't remember a summer with as many Sailfish bites as we have had this year. If you have ever wanted to have a great shot at hooking a Sailfish, short of a trip to Costa Rica or the long 70 mile run to the gulf stream, now is the time to go.
Nearshore and inshore the Redfish bite has really been picking up. Early morning and late evenings are producing the most fish. Live bait and artificails are catching fish. The flounder bite is picking up on the nearshore ledges and live bottom areas as well as in the creeks along the ICW.
Give me a call and let's go catch some fish.
Tight lines!!
