Spots, More Spots, and Even More Spots!
Hello from Surf City! Sorry I haven't posted recently. Been moving and time is getting short. Just wanted to let you know, you probably already know, that the spots are biting. They have been biting all week, and they are still biting. There have been small flounder at the piers and the surf, but not many keepers. Kings have disappeared and spanish are biting bottom rigs. The water is really muddy. There have been a few black drum and some sea mullets from the piers and surf. Surf City pier has reported a HUGE red drum, 46 inches long and 28 inch girth, and was released alive. I am told that using these numbers will give you an estimated weight of 43 pounds. The formula to use is length x girth x girth divided by 800. So 46x28x28=3064 divided by 800 = 45.08 lbs. That's a new pier record! The king bite offshore continues, as well as the gray trout. The specks are biting on the inside, baits have been live shrimp, mirro lures, and assorted grub combinations. Hope I can get to fishing soon.

Ms. Addie Thornton, 84 Years Young with her FIRST FISH!
Hello from Surf City!
Above is a picture of Addie Thornton and her fish. She is 84 years young and she says this is the first fish she ever remembers catching!! She has trouble getting around by herself, but she pulled in this "whopper" with no problem.... Ms. Addie was surf fishing with her daughter, granddaughter, (Robin) and son-in-law Ray. The family group managed to catch a nice mess of fish, including several big mullets, 3 keeper pompano, and 3 big spots. Just enough for a good fish fry !!
Ms. Addie says she would love it if "She could be Famous" with a picture of her and her first fish on our blog. Here is the picture Ms. Addie. We are happy to "Make You Famous!"
Congratulations to Ms. Addie and her family. We are glad they had a nice vacation. I hope it isn't too long before they can make the trip back to Topsail.

Catch them sight casting with the Boone Squid spoon. You can find these at Bug-Em Bait. Kings have shown up in good numbers from the beach out 10 miles; live bait, dead bait or GULP cigar minnows or GULP squid will catch you a limit. False albacore are biting jigging/casting spoons around the 7 mile range.
Offshore: Most everything is in close so no offshore report.
Gulfstream: The wahoo bite is awesome!
Registrations for my fishing schools are starting to come in now. If you want to go, and who wouldn’t want to learn from the pros, please don’t wait to the last minute. Seating is limited. Current Adventure 10/23 Report
Hello from Surf City!
Greetings to all!!!
Fall fishing is in full swing and we can only expect it to get better. The water is still a little warm, but the fishing is pretty hot.
Inshore the big story is still Redfish, Flounder and Speckled Trout. Live and artificial baits are both working well. Bluefish and some Spanish Mackerel are biting in the nearshore waters. Some Gray Trout are being caught around the near shore wrecks and live bottom areas.
The King Mackerel bite is really hot from just off the beach on out to 25 miles. A few Dolphin are being caught out around the 20-25 mile area, with a report of a few nice fish being caught inside of 10 miles. The Grouper bite has also picked up, especially in the 20-30 mile range.
Oct. 14, I had Bob and Carol aboard for a half day of inshore fun. They were the winning bidders for a trip that I donated to the UNCW athletic association for a fund raiser. We spent the morning fishing around the Fort Fisher historical site and had a great time. In all we caught a half dozen Redfish, 3 or 4 Flounder and a couple of small Specks.
On the 16th, I had one of our fine servicemen, home from Afghanistan, aboard for another day of great inshore fishing. Chis had contacted me via the internet while still overseas and I let him know that I would be honored to take him fishing. I new the day was going to be good when I hook and landed a nice speck on my first demonstration cast. We proceeded to work the specks over for the first two hours of the morning. Once that bite cooled off, we went in search of Chris's first Redfish. Chris told me that he had been trying to catch a Redfish since 1967 and that day, not only did he catch his first, but several more as well. We spent the day together picking away at the Redfish and Specks.
Welcome home soldier and be careful when you return!!!
This past weekend I spent my second year in a row guiding in the Cape Fear Red Trout Tournament to benefit Cystic Fibrosis. This tournament is part of the Redbone Tournament series. Once again, I had Wayne aboard, with his new partner Blake. Again, like last year, mother nature decided to hit us with a front and man did it screw up the fishing. The first day we made a 30 mile run down the river to get on the fish that I had been catching earlier in the week, but it just wasn't to be. Though we caught a few fish, none would measure so we made our 30 mile run back to the weigh-in with empty pockets. On Saturday, we fished closer to the tournament HQ, but once again, the fish had lock jaw and we ended up with a big goose egg. That's fishing folks.
October is almost gone, but November is coming quickly and I have good dates available. With the mild weather we have been having, the fishing will continue to be great. Give me a call and book your trip today.

Topsail Island fishing report
Hello from Surf City! The spot bite is still a bit slow with small runs from time to time. We are still waiting on the big fall run. There have been a few small catches of whiting and pompano, but nothing major. At night, there have been reports of puppy drum, mostly under the slot, and a few small speckled trout. A few black drum have been reported biting cut shrimp. The inside bite has been a bit better, with flounder being caught near the inlets, and along the ICW in deep holes. The speckled trout bite continues to improve in the New River and the Neuse River tidal basin. We are still waiting for cooler temperatures, so the water in the surf will cool a bit more. Hopefully, as soon as the water cools the speckled trout as well as the flounder bite will improve in the surf and from the piers.

STUDY DRAWS DISMAL SKETCH OF CORE SOUND FISHING INDUSTRY
Hello from Surf City! Here is a report from the North Carolina Marine Fisheries about the health of our states fisheries. It is very disturbing to me and should be disturbing to all of us especially recreational and commercial fishermen.

MOREHEAD CITY – Economic factors, such as coastal development and low seafood prices, have deteriorated the historic commercial fishing industry in the Down East area of Carteret County, according to an economic analysis released today by the N.C. Division of Marine fisheries.
The value of seafood landings has decreased by 50 percent since 1997 and participation in commercial fishing has dropped by 43 percent, according to the report.
Most disturbingly, fewer than half of the commercial fishermen who participated in a recent survey think they will still be a commercial fisherman a decade from now.
“Compared to a study of the same area five years ago, these numbers are alarming,” said Scott Crosson, DMF socio-economic program manager and author of the report. “This is the first time we’ve seen this many of the fishermen believing they will not be around in the future.”
The report finds that while household incomes in the area still compare to those in other rural North Carolina areas, fishing incomes have dropped sharply. Many fishermen have adapted by taking landside jobs and continuing to fish as supplemental income.
Active and retired commercial fishermen surveyed ranked the issues of fuel prices, low prices paid the fishermen at the docks, imported seafood, coastal development and loss of working waterfronts as the top challenges facing the industry. Many of these pressures are not likely to diminish in the near future.
A new law that gives tax breaks to working waterfronts and a new state fund for waterfront access may help lighten at least one of the economic pressures affecting the industry. Efforts to educate consumers about the benefits of locally harvested seafood and recent national headlines about tainted imported seafood may help sustain local markets, as well.
The report marks the seventh in a series of studies investigating the social and economic characteristics of North Carolina’s commercial fisheries. The Core Sound area of Carteret County (Down East) offers a representative view of the North Carolina fishing industry as a whole.

Rod Man Charters Fishing Report

The Louisiana trip with my son was absolutely the best fishing I have ever seen or done. In just three days of fishing we caught over 100 specks and over 70 redfish on artificials. Louisiana prohibited inshore netting many years ago and now they are enjoying the benefits.
While not Louisiana spectacular, local fishing is pretty good as well. Inshore and nearshore fishing is good for reds, flounder and trout. The kings are very hot from right on the beach to 10 miles. Now here’s my report:
Inshore: You can catch reds in the inlets, the creeks and the ICW. Catch them on topwater lures, on GULP ( I like the 3″ shrimp in molting or new penny), or on live or dead bait (fresh) using a carolina rig. Flounder are biting in and near the inlets. Again Gulp works well on a jig head and live finger mullet will get the job done. Bluefish are pretty thick around high tide at the inlets with some very nice spanish mixed in with them. Trout are in and near the inlets.
Near Shore: The big story here is the king mackerel bite. It has been hot hot hot for several days now. From near the beach to out 10 miles very nice kings have been biting most anything from dead cigar minnows to live poagies and everything in between.
Gulfstream: The wahoo bite has been awesome! If you have the boat go get some.
Just a moment on my Louisiana trip. I have already said it was the best ever, but some details are worth mentioning. The water was like coffee in color, yet we caught everything on artificials; trout on GULP, reds on GULP,and reds on Mirrolures (She Dog topwater). The fishing is so much fun it is hard to put into words. We saw seagulls diving out in open water and instead of blues, spanish or bonito, we caught specks under them. They were pushing the shrimp up to the surface and rolling all over them. Unbelievable! In the marsh, when we weren’t sight casting to redfish we were watching the huge schools out of our reach as they cruised the marsh and exploded on bait. At one point in an area the size of a football field we saw eight, that’s right eight large schools of reds! I would love for everyone to come fishing with me in NC, but if you get a chance to go to LA, make the trip and if you need a guide, the best in the state, just let me know and I’ll hook you up with him.
Boat show and fishing school season is just around the corner from our great fall fishing season. Registration for my fishing schools in Raleigh, Feb. 9 and in Wilmington, Mar. 1 is in full swing. Sea Sick Land Lubber!
Hello from Surf City!
This past Saturday, I was honored to go for my first offshore fishing trip (except for headboats) with my fishing bud Topsail Angler. We were targeting king mackerel, by slow trolling pogies. For the first three hours, I was fine, loving the experience, and learning about the teamwork that is involved in trolling a spread of baits. Then without warning, I got really seasick and began "chumming" about every 5 minutes. Mike offered to take me back in if I wanted to go, but I kept hoping the nausea would fade as the water calmed. Well, it didn't, instead getting steadily worse. We managed to hook five or six kings, but unfortunately we didn't boat a single fish. We had a bait on a short line in the prop wash, and we watched as a big king stalked the pogie and then attacked it ferociously. What an awesome experience that was. As much as I was enjoying the experience, I finally admitted defeat, and ask Mike to take me in. I thank Mike for taking me out and allowing me this experience. We had a bait on a short line in the prop wash, and we watched as a big king stalked the pogie and then attacked it ferociously. What an awesome experience that was. As much as I was enjoying the experience, I finally admitted defeat, and ask Mike to take me in. I thank Mike for taking me out and allowing me this experience. KINGS!......KINGS!.......KINGS!..........KINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello from Surf City! Kings have taken up residence at Surf City Pier. They pulled in 10 today, and (get this) 18 (yea 18) yesterday. At one time today there were 20 (twenty) boats trolling around the pier. Pompano are biting well, along with a few blues and spanish. Still no spots. Hopefully they will be here soon.
Donna and I fished the surf today, and caught a few. Two whiting (sea mullets), 5 pompano(a couple weighed almost a pound) and Donna pulled in a 16 1/2 inch flounder. Her first on a jig and gulp shrimp. I have a picture I will post later. She has caught flounder before, but mostly on bottom rigs. Except for one she caught in Banks Channel in Topsail Beach on a gotcha plug. She caught it after I tried to tell her how to fish the bait. She would throw out the gotcha and bring it back in with a slow steady retrieve. I told her she should be jerking the plug, and she promptly told me "Don't tell me how to fish!" Ain't that the way it goes?
Neighbor and fishin bud Tommy, has caught about a dozen keeper flounder this week, all from the surf, and most on a Gulp jerk shad.

The Reds are chomping-Current Adventure Charters
Hello from Surf City!
Greetings all!!!
The inshore Redfish bite continues to be fantastic!! There are a lot of big Redfish scouring the creeks and flats foraging on the abundant bait fish that is in the water now. We have been catching lots of fish on Berkley gulp jerk shad, shrimp and swimming mullet fished on bucktail jigs and jig heads. The bigger fish seem to be biting best on the high water right up next to the grass. I have managed to catch at least one fish 10lbs or over in my last six trips, with lots of slot fish, over slot fish and pups mixed in.
The Speckled Trout bite seemed to slow down a little this week, but should pick back up with the shortening days and with cooler weather. I witnessed a large school of specks feeding on mullet that they had pinned against an oyster bed Saturday morning, but we pressed on looking for big Redfish since that was what my guest really wanted to catch. I did manage to catch a few on a topwater zara spook before we moved on.
When the weather has permitted, King Mackerel are biting close to the beach and there are some big fish being caught.
I still have the 21st of October open and all weekends in November are open at this time. Call and book your trip today.

Surf Fishing Trip and Important News About Jennett's Pier
Hello from Surf City! Donna and I did a little surf fishing this afternoon. Caught one big pompano, gave it to a fellow that has never eaten pompano. Hope he enjoys it. I was able to find a few sand fleas, gave the remainder of my catch to a young guy fishing up the beach a bit. Educated him a bit about flea fishing. Didn't catch much, but every minute we spend on the beach is treasured.

They have created at 12 million renovation plan for the 5.12 acre site. The new pier will be a 1000 foot structure that will be 25 feet wide. The pier will be funded with the Aquarium's admission funds and no state tax dollars would be used except for the 2.5 million dollars that the state has already given the Aquarium Division for this project. The schedule includes plans to be finalized by next April and construction starting in June with the pier being opened in 2010. The demolition of the old pier will be this winter.
According to the drawings the pier house will be 2 stories with a tackle shop, concession stand and arcade on the first level with the top being meeting rooms and catering. The water system will include medians and cisterns that will collect storm water, fresh water and saltwater to be for irrigation, plumbing water and replenish the water for the aquarium tank water. Spot Run Continues
Hello from Surf City! The spot bite continues, sometimes two at a time, sometimes one here and there. But for the anglers that wait it out, there are spots to catch. Haven't seen many black drum yet, just one from the surf occasionally. Hopefully they will be here shortly. Sea mullet and whiting are showing more, with a few big ones mixed in. Pompanos are still here, mostly just over hand size, but some over a pound, and I have seen a couple up to three pounds. Blues are being caught on bottom rigs. It's still too muddy for spanish. I have had a few reports of keeper flounder, but not a lot. Flounder and speckled trout continue bite on the inside waters in deep holes and tidal creeks. Reds can be found along grass lines, and in the tidal creeks along the ICW.
I will be on the pier Wednesday afternoon, to fish the NC Fishing Pier Society World Tour. It looks like we may get rained on, but maybe it will hold until I win that NCFPS cap. Ya hear that AL? Hope to meet Al, and some of the other NCFPS members. I will be wearing my NCFPS T-shirt. Hope to see you there!

Hello from Surf City! Spot bite continues to be good. Surf City Pier reports a good bite through last night. I expect it to continue as long as we have the NE wind, and it doesn't get too rough. I got a fishing report from the inside from Fishin Bud Jim. Here is a portion of the report.

JOHNNY, .....MY FISHIN BUD AND I MADE IT OUT TODAY UP ONE OF OUR FAVORITE CREEKS , STARTED ABOUT 7 THIS MORN FISHING THE FALLING TIDE WE FISHED THE MOUTH FIRST AND PICKED UP SOME SMALL DRUM, 4 . WE FISHED UP MOST ALL THE WAY PICKING UP ONE EVERY NOW AND THEN , SMALL DRUM AND FLO, THEN I HIT A BIG FLO 18" ANOTHER ONE FOLLOWED BUT LOST IT AT THE BOAT , MY FISHIN BUD ALSO CAUGHT 1 SMALL TROUT AND LOST ANOTHER ONE AT THE BOAT, SO ALL IN ALL WE CAUGHT 4 FLO ONE LEGAL, 5 DRUM NONE LEGAL, AND 1 TROUT BUT HAD A GREAT DAY , BUT WE DID GET OUT BUTTS WET A COUPLE OF TIMES , CAUGHT OUR FISH ON 3" NATURAL AND NEW PENNY SHRIMP. USING 1/16TH JIG HEADS, TROUT WE CAUGHT ON 4 " DARK GREEN GRUBS WITH 1/4 JIG HEADS. SO I AM FIRED UP AND READY NOW THE FISH ARE COMING IN, AM RIGGED AND READY . WILL BE BACK AT THEM TOMORROW MORN ,

Surf and Pier Report
Hello from Surf City! Fishing around Topsail Island continues to improve with the cooler water and weather. Spots are showing up more often, although the "big fall run" hasn't started yet. Sea mullets, some quite large, are biting well on the piers and surf, along with flounder, blues and spanish. The spanish are more plentiful than I have seen recently. The water seems to be full of them. Bottom fishing anglers have caught them on bottom rigs with cut shrimp for bait. Spanish are also being caught from the surf by persistent pluggers. The red drum bite continues to be good at night from the surf, and huge schools have been found in the flats off the ICW and along weedlines. Speckled trout are showing up, some 3 to 4 pounders have been landed from the piers and surf. Huge pompano up to three pounds are hitting cut shrimp and sand fleas. King mackerel from the pier is hot one day and dead the next. Near shore boaters are catching lots of spanish and kings on live bait rigs and plugs. The wind is up a bit today, but it is still out of the NE which usually translates to good bottom fishing. Fishing is looking up.
All the local tackle shops are having their fall sale, and there some bargains. Now is the time to replentish your supply of fishing equipment and artificials that have been depleted this year.
Weather remains good, with mild temperatures, and beautiful days and nights occasionally interupted by short periods of light refreshing rain.

Fall fishing is in full swing-Current Adventure Charters
Hello from Surf City!
Fishing along the Carolina Coast from Surf City Down to Southport is just on fire. Redfish, Speckled Trout and Flounder are the big draws in the inshore waters, while King and Spanish Mackerel, Mahi, Gray Trout and False Albacore are the big draws in the offshore waters. Wahoo are going off in the stream.
Though strong winds have limited the offshore fishing as of late, when conditions are right, the fishing is hot. Large King Mackerel are close to the beach feeding on schools of mullet and menhaden that are making their way south. There are lots of big Spanish Mackerel and False Albacore close to the beach as well. The Gray Trout are showing up on the near shore reefs, structure and live bottoms.
Fall is the time for some great inshore fishing and this year is no different. The Redfish and Speckled Trout fishing has been incredible as of late, even with all of the high winds we have had. Redfish are eagerly eating jigs, top water plugs, soft plastics, spoons, spinner baits and live bait. The Speckled Trout are biting topwater plugs, soft plastics, jerk baits and live bait. The flounder have been biting the same things and are typically caught while fishing for the other two species, making it pretty easy to catch and inshore slam this time of year.
Look for the fishing to get even better in the weeks to come as the water continues to cool down and the days get shorter. I have a few dates left October and most of November is open as of now. The dates that I have left open this month are:
October 7, 21, and 26. Call and book your trip today.
