Fisheries group calls for total gill-net ban, cites legislative inaction on gamefish bill - North Carolina Sportsman

This article is almost two years old, but I enjoyed reading it again. I hope you do also.
Tight Lines!
Johnny

The Coastal Fisheries Reform Group declared last week its intent to seek a total gill-net ban in North Carolina coastal waters.

The notice came in a news release that cited inaction on the part of the state legislature on a bill that would give gamefish status to spotted seatrout, striped bass and red drum, plus inaction on the part of the legislature’s Committee on Marine Resources. CFRG also cites inaction on the part of the North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission to approve measures to conserve and protect certain saltwater fish species.

Whiting Fishing • Inshore Fishing in Southeast North Carolina • North Carolina Sportsman, NC:

'via Blog this'

With the beautiful 70 degree and slightly overcast day planned ahead Capt. Butch and Barbara along with BoBo and myself decided to make a trip Whiting fishing. After fighting a little fog to get anchored up on our desired location, Capt. Butch had one in the boat before anyone else even had gotten their bait on! 'They're biting!' he sounded and soon we all 3 were bringing Whitings in the boat at a regular pace!

Black drum will get creel, size limits on Jan. 1.

N.C. anglers can't keep black drum under 14 inches, only one over 25 inches - North Carolina Sportsman

The N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission has voted to manage the recreational catch of black drum with size and creel limits that will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2014.
Federal fisheries managers require states to implement possession limits and size minimums on black drum, and the commission that oversees North Carolina’s coastal fisheries voted at its November meeting to establish a 10-fish recreational creel limit, a 14-inch size minimum and a 14- to 25-inch slot limit that allows one fish longer than 25 inches to be kept daily.

Topsail Area Fishing Report Nov 24, 2013

Hello from Surf City, NC.
It's COLD, COLD, COLD. Did I mention that it is a bit cold on Topsail Island. Low Temps tonight is forecast to be in the lower 30's at the beach, and the low 20's inland. But the cold weather didn't keep everyone inside hugging the fireplace. Jason Dail braved the cold and was rewarded with a couple of nice speckled trout. Check out the pic below. Great catch Jason!

Topsail August 1, 2013

By Editor | August 1, 2013
Dan Murphy (age 15), of Hampstead, NC, with a 33 lb. king mackerel that bit a live bluefish off the end of Jolly Roger Pier.
Chris, of East Coast Sports, reports that anglers have landed some healthy king mackerel from Topsail’s piers over the past week (to 30+ lbs.). Boaters have also been getting in on the action and are hooking kings from the beachfront to the 15 mile areas. Some large spanish (6+ lbs.) have been feeding within a few miles of the beachfront as well, and they will pounce on live baits just like the kings.
Anglers also reported decent numbers of sailfish inside 15 miles last week. Live baits or rigged ballyhoo will attract attention from the sails.
A few dolphin have also been around Christmas Rock, with more feeding from there offshore to the break.
Bottom fishermen caught surprising numbers of gag grouper around AR-362 last week, and more are feeding around natural bottom structure from there offshore. Live, dead, and cut baits will all get attention from the grouper.
Anglers on the piers also saw a decent spot run in recent days, with shrimp and bloodworms producing most of the fish.
Inshore, the flounder bite is still going strong, with fish coming from the inlets, marshes, creeks, and structure like docks in the ICW. Live menhaden and finger mullet are top flounder baits, but anglers can also hook up while working Gulps and other scented soft lures.
Thomas Bardin, of Wilson, NC, with a 7 lb. sheepshead he hooked on a live crab while fishing in Banks Channel near Topsail Beach.
Ladyfish are all over the inshore waters and are feeding heavily at night around lighted structure like bridges. Casting flashy lures like Rapala X-Raps around surface activity is the way to hook up with the ladies.
Red drum are feeding in the marshes and bays off the ICW and New River. They’ve been rather willing to bite topwater plugs lately, and anglers can also hook them on soft plastics and live or cut baits when they’re not feeding on top.
Allen, of Breadman Ventures, reports that anglers are still catching solid numbers of red drum in the bays and backwaters off the New River and ICW. They’re biting topwater plugs readily, but can be tempted to eat soft plastic baits with scents like Pro-Cure Super Gel when they’re not fooled by the surface lures.
Plenty of flounder are also in the area. They’ll bite live baits and are also fans of the same scented soft plastics that anglers can hook the reds on.
Richard, of Seaview Pier, reports that anglers are hooking bluefish and spanish mackerel while working Gotcha plugs and other metal lures from the planks.
Bottom fishermen are connecting with some sea mullet and spot on shrimp and bloodworms.
Some flounder are biting small live baits under the pier.
Gary Mcadee, of Richlands, NC, with a stud speckled trout that bit a MirrOlure She Pup topwater plug in the New River near Sneads Ferry. He was fishing with Capt. Allen Jernigan of Breadman Ventures.
Dangling sand fleas and barnacles near the pilings is producing some sheepshead.
Live-baiters landed several king mackerel (to 37 lbs.) from the end of the pier last week.
Bob, of Surf City Pier, reports that anglers landed several king mackerel from the end of the pier last week while live-baiting with bluefish and other baits.
Some sea mullet, bluefish, and spot are biting bloodworms and shrimp on bottom rigs.
Plug casters are also picking up an occasional bluefish.
Robbie, of Jolly Roger Pier, reports that anglers landed several king mackerel from the pier last week when the water was clean.
A few bluefish are taking an interest in Gotcha plugs worked from the pier.
Some black drum, sea mullet, and spot are biting shrimp and bloodworms on bottom rigs.
Sheepshead are feeding around the pier’s pilings, but few people are fishing for them.

Prescription Fishing Sunglasses - These are GREAT !

Check out our Facebook Message Board Over 900 members and growing!

I ran across these sunglasses on the web. They look great and I can't wait to try them. Check these out. I think you will want to try them also.
Thanks,
Johnny aka "Fishin'Topsail"

Prescription Fishing Sunglasses are now available with an updated lens design focused on the specific needs of an angler. The angler specific lens technology provides a larger portion of the reading corridor for near vision, like baiting a hook. The angler progressive lens is a stark contrast to a traditional progressive lens that has a focal distance that gets progressively closer as you look lower in the lens. A traditional progressive lens design provides a very small portion of the lens near vision. Designing more of the lens to focus on the specific needs of anglers allows for more head movement while keeping near objects in focus.

Fishing Sunglasses with this prescription lens design,
based on recent Free-Form Digital lens technology, recalculates the curve of a lens at every point e lens. This eliminates the peripheral distortion referred to as the “fishbowl effect”. The upper portion of a Free-Form Digital lens provides the sharpest distance vision possible, while the bottom of the lens provides a near-vision portion that is perfect for fishermen.

Prescription Oakley Sunglasses are the first to market with this new lens design. Oakley also offers the largest selection of polarized lens colors designed for a fishing environment. The Oakley Shallow Blue Iridium lens is a polarized bronze lens with an oxide coating to minimize blue light distortions. The Oakley Deep Blue Iridium lens is a polarized grey lens with the same coating. The combination of the fishing-specific prescription lens design and polarized lens colors designed specifically for fishing has made Oakley a top pick for serious anglers.

ADS Sports Eyewear is one of the first Authorized Oakley dealers to focus on the new angler-specific lenses, which are available for any of the Oakley frames you find on the ADS website. The company is optician owned and operated with a knowledgeable staff that uses and understands prescription eyewear for active people and will answer any questions you might have about the new Angler-Specific lenses.

Pre Fishing for IFA Regional Championship Titusville, Fl

Fished around Titusville today but never made it to the lagoon.  Ended up finding cruising fish right off a school of jacks and some snook this morning.  Landed a lower slot red cruising w his back out of the water on my second cast.  There were two reds cruising in 4 inches of crystal clear water on a bank loaded w bait.  Moved down the bank and saw a couple more sitting Just a little deeper in 10 inches of water.  These fish were aggressive.  I bumped them and an upper slot red popped the soft plastic moving away from the boat.  Decided to cover more water and hit some areas that looked good on satellite images.  Hooked a large red shortly after putting the trolling motor down and it pulled the hooks after a short battle.  Moved again and found two reds cruising the skinny busting shrimp.  Popped one on this bank and moved again.  Hit some structure and wacked two decent trout in a row and then called it a day.  Only fished 3 hours in a place I have never fished before and had an inshore slam.  Cant wait to hit the water tomorrow.

2012 Redfish Action Series Champs

I took a couple days off from guiding to fish the final leg of the Redfish Action Series in Beaufort, NC. My tournament boat is in the shop with some motor issues so I took the skiff up to Beaufort. With max speed in the skiff at 30 mph it eliminated us from running back to Topsail. I covered a lot of water and found two nice schools of upper and over slot fish along with several other singles and pods of fish. We popped our first two fish within 15 minutes of getting to our first spot. After one more cast we had two nearly perfect 27" fish. The fish were perfect in length, but were very skinny. We searched the rest of the day to upgrade to heavier fish without success. Our fish weighed 12.98 lbs and landed us in 3rd place for the tournament. With this strong finish we were able to capture the 2012 Redfish Action Series Championship.

Now to our local fishing: Fishing has been good from Southport to Sneads Ferry and everywhere in between. We are catching redfish, trout, flounder, and jacks on topwater lures, spoons, and soft plastics.

more times and pulled a 24 and 25 inch fish back to back. Left them alone and then fished a couple more spots and only found small fish. The next day I searched several miles of flats only to find a few single fish. Then I checked a couple more spots and found a nice school of fish being harassed by a couple large sharks. The fish pounced on a soft plastic and after a good fight I brought it to the boat-a perfect 27" fish. I went on to catch about 9 more from this school and all were 24" to 30". As I was leaving the fish to find some more I found another school of about 75 fish that looked perfect. Turned around as the fish were moving away in crystal clear water and led them with a cape lookout gold spoon and wacked a 26.6" fish. Left those fish alone and went to find more fish between them and the tournament check out. At one of the next two spots I found very aggressive fish but not many of them. I broke off the first fish on a popping cork rig. The next fish crushed my popping cork and then came after it again. I have had this happen in the past but have always been able to lift the cork up where the bait is on topWe weighed our two fish in and they yielded 12.98 lbs-not very heavy for two nearly perfect 27" fish. With this weight we landed in 3rd place for the tournament and secured the 2012 Redfish Action Series Championship.

Fishing Shorts from AFTCO

I received a pair of fishing shorts from the American Fishing Tackle Co. (AFTCO). These fishing shorts may just be the most versatile and comfortable fishing shorts I have ever worn. The fabric is sturdy but very light and airy. Is airy even a word? I wore the AFTCO fishing shorts for a day, then put them back on the next day. With temps here at Surf City in the 80’s and 90’s I stayed extremely cool. The shorts I normally wear fishing have always felt heavy and hot after a few hours in the hot sun, but these shorts kept me cool, even when there was almost no breeze on the beach. Another plus about the AFTCO shorts is the pockets. With two regular pockets on the front, two additional pockets with flaps (close with Velcro) in the front, two pockets with the same type flaps in the rear, as well as a unique and very handy slit type pocket in the front just the right size to hold fishing plyers or a cell phone, although I wouldn’t recommend the latter. The four flap pockets that close with Velcro are vented, with two donut type vents at the bottom of each. Although I loved the convenience of all the pockets, my favorite feature was the way they kept me cool and comfortable. I don’t know technically how they kept me cool, I just know it did and I liked it. I would recommend these fishing shorts to any of my fishing friends. They are really nice, and I plan to buy more. Thanks again to AFTCO for the opportunity to wear test these shorts. Below is a link to their website. http://www.aftco.com/fishing-shorts.htm Have a wonderful and Blessed day! Fwd: Rod-Man Report

Hi Folks,

Boat Update: I have sold my boat. Now I am working on obtaining a new one. It was a good time to sell the old, but I am missing some great fishing waiting on the new. You do not have to wait. Get out on the water with your boat or let me know and I will hook you up with a very good captain. Now here's my report:

INSORE: Fall fishing is on fire. Red drum, flounder, and trout: they are all biting. All the usual spots are providing fish. Fish the inlets, the waterway, the creeks and the river. Fish live bait, dead bait and artificials. It's all happening. My favorite artificial is a ¼ oz. led head combined with a Gulp 4" Baitfish or a 5" Jerk Bait.

NEAR SHORE: Exciting times are just off the beach too. The Spanish bite is still on and producing some very nice fish. Also, there are some very good bluefish biting. King mackerel are cruising the beach and False Albacore are bending some rods as well.

OFFSHORE: Some more kings and false albacore are biting and Frying Pan is producing a smorgasbord of fishes.

GULFSTREAM: The stream is providing good action on wahoo, blackfin and a few yellowfin tuna.

UPCOMING: More and more of the same in the way of fall fishing will continue until it gets too cold, which doesn't seem a threat in the near future. But, when it does turn cold it will be boat show season and I will be there. I will be posting my schedule for Raleigh, Greensboro, Richmond and Wilmington soon. I am building a lot of my show special custom rods for the boat shows. I hope to provide you with one…or two!

Until next time…

Hello from Topsail Beach!
My grandson and myself fished Surf City Ocean Pier last night and the sharks were thick. I'm talking about 4 and 5 footers in knee deep water, not 50 feet from swimmers playing in the surf after dusk. What are they thinking????? It was crazy. We counted four sharks, at once, so don't know how many more there were that we couldn't count. Also in attendance were huge rays, at least a dozen. We didn't catch much, just small blues and even smaller croakers. But about dawn the larger blues moved in, and using gotcha plugs, we caught close to our limit, and even one 18 inch spanish. This was Zack's first time fishing with gotchas, and now he is hooked! We had much fun!

Rodman Charters Report

[quote]

Hi Folks,
Hot, hot, hot! While the weather maybe on the hot side, it takes precise timing and location to get on the bite. That was adequately proven last week when 4 hours of fishing good hot spots for flounder yielded nothing and then at our last stop we caught 3 fish in less than 45 minutes. With the weather this hot, you have to be patient, fish your spots and be willing to move around. It’s also a good time to try new approaches and even some old ones you haven’t used in a while. Now here’s my report:
INSHORE: Water temps are in the low 80’s. Menhaden live bait is plentiful and the small finger mullet are starting to show up. The flounder bite has been very good on the rising tide. Redfish are plentiful but a little bit skittish. Patience and stealth will get them to bite. Best time is falling tide.
NEAR SHORE: Spanish mackerel continue to make their here today gone tomorrow routine. They have been absolutely unpredictable. Some good flounder fishing around the inshore AR’s both with live bait and jigging with bucktails tipped with gulp shrimp. You will also catch some nice sea bass using this technique.
OFFSHORE: The bite here has been slow. Not sure what is going on but hope it is just that one week June lull that seems to happen every year. Kings and inshore mahi should be biting as well as the usual AR inhabitants, amberjack and barracuda. Look for sailfish to show up soon from 10 to 25 miles out.
GULFSTREAM: High winds have kept most boats from going to the blue. No reports.
UPCOMING: The king and mahi show should take off any day now in the 10-18 mile range. Big flounder have started showing up and should become more aggressive. Redfishing is improving and should be full ahead. Be sure to check out the new pics at the Photo Gallery at www.rodmancharters.com
Until next time…

RALEIGH, N.C. (June 21, 2011) – The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is reminding the public that July 4 is a “free fishing day” in North Carolina when everyone — residents and non-residents — can fish in all public waters, including coastal waters, from 12:01 a.m. until 11:59 p.m., without purchasing a fishing license.
While everyone can fish in public waters without a license, all other fishing regulations, such as length and daily possession limits, as well as bait and tackle restrictions, apply.

I haven't been out, (migraine) but I have reports that the water is clear, and catches of spots, virginia mullets, blues, spanish, flounder, and citation pompano (sand fleas) are being reported. There are lots of big sheepshead being caught under the 172 bridge in Sneads Ferry. Reds are at Lea Island, and oyster bars elsewhere.
Good luck!

Surf City Ocean Pier Update
Surf City Pier reports a few blues and spanish on gotcha plugs, mornings and evenings. Bottom fishing is slow during the day, but picks up considerable in the evening and night. Bloodworms, available at the pier tackle shop, seem to be the best bait. While you are at Surf City Pier, check out their grill and try the Mosquito Burger.  MMMMMMM GOOD!

Finally, some good reports to post .........

Surf City Pier report ......... Some spanish and blues early yesterday. A few spots during the day and evening. A couple of keeper flounder on live bait. A few nice virginia mullets were caught along with many smaller fish. Got one report from a beachcomber this morning that a nice sheepshead was caught on SC Pier yesterday.

Sea View Fishing Report ....... by Sea View website ........
Some Spanish and blues to be caught on plugs and jigs but you would need to put in your time as the day goes on. It picks up some toward the evening. Best bite has been the mornings. Bait fishing has been slow/descent for mullets, spots, black drum and croakers with the bite being better in the evenings/night. Some flounder and sheepshead has been decked.
King Fishing weekend wrap up. So Friday we had three king hits and put two on the deck (19 & 26 pounds) and one bite off. Also Jason had the piers first Tarpon hookup this season which broke off. Saturday we had two hits one was lost at the gaff (20~25 pounds) and another was cut while it was peeling out line. Sunday we had one king hit and it was decked at 27.9 pounds. Monday our streak was broke and had zero king hits. We had an average of 7 chopper blues for those three days.

Jolly Roger report ....... by Rob Orr ..... "Blues & Spanish are being caught this morning on Got-Cha lures. Summer spots have been caught for the past week, mainly on bloodworms. Some nice whiting, pompano & black drum in the mix. Most of the bottom fish are being caught at night."

My fishing buddies, Caleb and Jonothan caught some nice sheepshead Monday. A couple were BIG! Not sure where they were fishing ....... Sorry I din't get any pics, my camera was full.

Reds were busting topwater lures in the tidal creeks off the ICW near Lea Island Monday and Tuesday. More fish were lost than were landed, but the anglers had a really enjoyable and exciting day.

Here is a list of sites where I aquire some of the info I post. If I can't get out to visit the piers, I will call them on the telephone for a report. I can't personally verify all the reports, due to my health problems, I just can't get out there that often, but from past experience with these folks, I believe they are pretty accurate.

Thanks to all who provide me with the data to post these reports, and a special thanks to the readers of this blog.

Summer Weather and Good Summer Fishing around the area waters!

Summer has really been showing its face around here lately and with the warm air comes more bait and more means more fish to catch! I’ve seen a big change in water temps in the last few days, the waters around Wrightsville Beach are hanging around 80` inshore; time to go for a swim! With this warm water the bait has just exploded in numbers in the area waters and it is very easy to find.

The Spanish mackerel and Bluefish are just about everywhere you go just off the beaches from twenty feet to forty feet of water; you should have no problem catching them. I’ve had the best luck with deeper spoons on number one planners, yes I’m seeing a few on the top line but the best has been deeper. Clark-spoons in sizes 00 and 0 are doing the trick in colors silver, gold and pink flash. The Spanish hitting the top baits are hitting Blue Water Candy’s Spanish Daisy chains in colors pink, blue and silver; the great thing about this rig is you can pull it off lighter tackle outfits. I’m using thirty and forty pound clear Berkley Big Game mono for all my Spanish leaders. Tip: keep your trolling and casting speed up; faster moving baits seem to get more bites, I troll around five knots or six mph.

If you know me at all you know I love to fish for Cobia and it is now Cobia season for our local waters; the Cobia have been showing up during the last few weeks. I look this time of year for Cobia around inlets, shoals and bait schools; near shore/offshore reefs and ledges are also a good place to look too. With the water being so clear it has been easier to see those brown logs in the water. We are throwing big jigs, swim baits and live bait to the Cobia. Color really does not seem to matter; but “go bright”! When I’m not sight casting for them, we are fishing around inlets, shoals and near shore artificial reefs. I float fish, bottom fish and kite fish in these areas with live menhaden, blues and mullet as bait. If you hook one of these beast, take your time fighting them, they don’t tire out easily; a green Cobia can really tear up a boat or you!

The Redfish have slowed a little bit over the last week due to the waters warming up so fast, but we are still catching them; going earlier in the morning seems to help the bite some. Fishing top-water baits like MirrOlure’s Top Dog Jr or Top Pup also Sebile’s Ghost Walker are catching me some really nice Reds in shallow water. When I’m fishing in deeper water for Reds like around docks, creek mouths and deeper grass lines; I’m casting Berkley Gulp products like the Ripple Mullet or the three inch Gulp shrimp. The colors I prefer in the Ripple Mullet are rootbeer gold/chart tail, goby magic chart tail, new penny and pearl white for the Redfish. Rig these baits on a red, black, brown or gray jig head with a thirty to fifty pound mono or fluorocarbon leader. I have had some good luck lately with spinner baits for the Redfish and the trick that seems to work for me is a Ripple Mullet in the color rootbeer gold/chart tail as the grub on the spinner bait. Remember reel that spinner bait; just fast enough to keep it off the bottom.

Fishing Gear I use:

Reels Penn Fierce and Battle spinning in sizes 2000, 3000 & 4000 sizes. Cobia Fishing reels: Penn Battle 5000, 6000 & 7000, Penn 320LD. Line: Spiderwire Ultra-cast and Berkley Fireline braid in 8, 10 and 15 pound. Cobia Line: 30 pound Berkley Big Game Mono. Rods: Fenwick HMG GS 70M-MF, Ugly stick lites 6’6” and 7’ Med & Med-Heavy. Cobia Rods: Ugly Stik Tiger Lite Jigging series in 50-100 class spinning and casting. Leader material: Cobia; Berkley Big Game mono & Fluorocarbon in eighty to one hundred pound. Stren Fluorocarbon leader material in Tannic and Gunsmoke tints; tannic for river and stained waters, gunsmoke for clear water applications.

Thanks for reading this report, if you have any questions just let me know! Get out there and enjoy this summer weather, winter was cold and summer is going to be Hot!

On the piers, a few drum & sheepshead, Blues & Spanish are still hitting early morning & late afternoon, catching a few nice pompano, sea mullets at night. Seaview reports first legal cobia of the year on May 23. Surf City Pier reports a few blues and spanish in the early am and right at dark. Gotcha plugs. Small Virginia Mullets at Topsail Beach

Hello from beautiful Topsail Island. It was another wonderful day on Topsail Island. Donna and I stayed on the beach all afternoon. Enough for me to get a good sunburn on my forehead. I forgot my cap. My forehead had not seen much sun this year. The bottle nose dolphins were out in force today giving everyone on the beach a free show. They were following a couple of kayaks around in the surf, riding the waves and jumping happily. There were a few virginia mullets in the surf at Topsail Beach this afternoon. They were not huge, but just frying pan size. I heard of a few really nice pompano in the surf as well. The action in the surf depended on who you talked to. My fishin bud Caleb fished behind Lea Island, but didn't catch anything except an undersized flounder. The piers all reported some nice catches of blues, and spanish in the early am. I won't get to fish tomorrow, having the car serviced. But I will probably get some reports, I'll post when I can.

We are blessed to live in such a beautiful place. God is good.

Till next time....
Tight lines!
