The red drum bite at Topsail remains strong. Sea mullets / whiting are biting sand fleas, cut shrimp and blood worms. Lots of pompano in the suds, but most are small. Fish near the sand bar with sand fleas for the huge three to five pound pomps. The flounder bite is the best I have seen in several years. Live shrimp is producing best, with finger mullets and cut bait strips following close behind. Try these baits fished carolina rig style. Still blues around, most of what I have seen are small snappers, but there are a few big blues in the water.
Speckled trout bite is still scattered, but there are some big ones in the surf. Live shrimp best bait followed by mirro-lure and jig and grub. Try a popping cork fished over your grub to attract attention to your bait.
The spot run at Topsail is still good at times. You have to stay on the piers until
the runs start to get your coolers full of spots. They seem to be a bit
small this year, haven't seen many of the big "yellow bellies". I have
heard of some good spot catches in the ICW near creek mouths especially
around Topsail Creek.... Black drum are plentiful in the suds. I have seen
some really nice ones, three to four pounds. Catch 'em up!
Till next time....
Tight lines!
