Another Sewage Spill in New River

Hello from Surf City! I am sad to report that there has been another sewage spill into the New River in Onslow County. Here is an email I received from the New River Foundation.

Dear Johnny,

Sadly, we have had another large raw sewage spill into
the New River. The Riverkeeper was at the site
within 15 minutes of being notified and will be working
hard to find out what happened. He is meeting with City
officials starting at 7:30 am tomorrow morning. We
will send more information over the next few days.
Please avoid the water in and near Chaney Creek until we
start receiving testing results from the Division of
Water Quality.

Winter Fishing?

Hello from Surf City!
Ok, so it's winter, it's cold, it's windy, so there is no reason to go fishing. Right? Wrong! The fish are there, but they are not as active as during the warmer months. You just have to switch tactics a bit. To begin, don't winterize that boat. If you don't have a boat, find a new friend that has one. This year especially, there are lots of fish, (red drum and speckled trout), holding in the creeks. I am being told that we haven't had enough rain to change the salinity of the creek water, so the fish are in no hurry to get out. Use the same baits as you would use in the spring or fall, but slow down the retireve. Cold water means slow metabolism to fish which are cold blooded animals. Slow is the ticket. I like to use a cork in cold weather. I pop it occasionally to maybe attract a fish. You may also try the inlets. It seems to me that there are fish in the inlets, even when you can't find them anywhere else. Don't expect to catch as many as you would in the warmer months, so take a chair and some beverage with you. And don't forget something to snack on. A nice walk to the inlet, a morning or afternoon surrounded by ocean and sand, now that's the idea. If you catch a fish, well that's just a bonus! As my fishin bud Jim says, Go Gettummmmm!

Specks Finally Showing in the Surf?

Hello from Surf City! Getting reports of a few small specks being caught in the surf, but the big ones still seem to be holding in the creeks. We may need a good rain to run them out into the waterway and inlets. Falling tides seem to be the best
time to fish the surf. Fish lures slowly, as the water temps are in the middle 50's. No word of anything else biting in the surf. The reds are still biting in the creeks on Gulp shrimp and Gulp swimming mullets. Fishing bud Jim is catching lots of reds and a few nice trout in the creeks. Check out the pics.

Bernice Reece, AKA Miss Lee

Bernice Reece, AKA Miss Lee, with four of her great-grandchildren.

I am sorry to report that Donna's mom, Bernice Reece, locally know as Miss Lee, passed away in the early morning hours of December 29. She led a long (84 years) and blessed life. She had been in failing health for a year, but was doing well. Her death was a complete surprise. Until last December, (2006), when she became ill, Miss Lee worked as a cashier at Batt's Grill in Surf City. Before that she worked as a cashier at One Stop Restaurant.

Donna's dad, Lee Reece who passed away in 1995 worked at the old East Coast Tackle for many years and was knows to the locals as Mr. Lee. As his vision started failing, Bernice would go sit with him at the cash register, and help him read the prices and such. Folks would call them Mr. Lee and Miss Lee. That's how she came to be known as Miss Lee.

Thanks for your concern and especially your prayers. Her death will be hard on Donna, especially after all the family leave and we are left in the house without her. Prayers for her and other family and friends are appreciated. She will be missed.
