Fisherman's Post Topsail Area Fishing Report – August 14, 2014
Topsail/Sneads Ferry Fishing Reports
Bonita Rogers Miller, of Jacksonville, NC, with a fat speckled trout that bit a Carolina-rigged finger mullet in the New River near downtown Jacksonville.
Michelle and Melissa Cherry with Michelle’s first dolphin, a cow that bit a ballyhoo behind a black/red chugger 35 miles off Topsail Inlet while they were fishing with Tim Powell on the “Timtation.”
Jackson Wright (age 8) holds an 8.2 lb. sheepshead that bit a live finger mullet near some inshore structure at Surf City. Weighed in at East Coast Sports.
D.J., of East Coast Sports, reports that there’s been an excellent speckled trout bite in the New River in recent days, and anglers are fooling the fish on topwater plugs, suspending hard baits like MirrOlure MR17’s, soft plastics, and live baits.
Red and black drum are feeding along the ICW, on the flats, and around structure like docks. Anglers can tempt the reds to bite live baits or a variety of artificials, with shrimp and fiddler crabs as top choices for the black drum.
Flounder fishing inshore has also been excellent lately, with good numbers of fish coming from inshore structure and the creeks.
The flounder bite has been solid in the ocean as well, where the fish are feeding around nearshore rocks, ledges, and artificial reefs. Live baits will work in the ocean, but Gulp baits pinned to bucktail jigs can be even more effective.
Spanish mackerel and bluefish are feeding just off the beachfront, and anglers are hooking both while working casting lures from the piers and trolling Clarkspoons and other shiny offerings from boats.
Not many reports have come in from offshore lately, but there is still a decent dolphin bite for boats making the run to the Gulf Stream.

Topsail Fishing Report from Fisherman's Post July 31,2014
Chandler Rosenbaun with a 33 lb. (minus tail) king mackerel that bit a live bait off the end of Jolly Roger Pier.
Cathy, of East Coast Sports, reports that surf casters are hooking some red and black drum, bluefish, spot, and croaker along the island’s beachfront. Shrimp are fooling most of the fish.
Some spanish mackerel and bluefish are feeding just off the beaches, and anglers are hooking them while working Gotcha plugs from the piers and trolling Clarkspoons from boats.
Several king mackerel have been landed from the island’s piers over the past week, so boaters should be able to target them fairly close to land right now. Live baits like menhaden and bluefish are the way to go for the kings.

Chris, of East Coast Sports, reports that some large sheepshead (fish to 11 lbs. recently) and black drum are feeding around area bridge and dock pilings. Anglers are hooking both on shrimp and fiddler crabs fished tight to the structure.
Red drum action remains hot in the sound, where anglers are finding the fish feeding in the creeks and marshes. They’ve been biting topwater plugs very well recently, and anglers can also cast spoons, soft plastic baits, or live and cut baits with success.

Dusty Harrison Red Drum
Dusty Harrison caught this red drum in the surf on last Tuesday morning. He also caught a 24 inch slot red drum on Sunday night. Finger mullet was the bait fished on a drum rig. Dusty also caught a nice sized blue fish!

6th Annual Children’s Fishing Competition and Celebration at Surf City Pier
We will be hosting our 6th Annual Children’s Fishing Competition and Celebration on Friday, July 4, 2014. This event is free and is open to all children under the age of 16 whom are local or visiting our quiet little island. This will expose these youngsters to the excitement of fishing in a fun, educational, and safe family oriented environment.
Our first five years have been such a huge success,that we are now in need of donors and donations for our event. For the past five years, we have had the honor of Pender EMS and the local Volunteer Fire Departments on site to ensure that the children have a fun and safe celebration. We have also been fortunate enough to offer all the children a Fishing Competition and Celebration t-shirt in addition to other fabulous gifts and prizes that have been donated from area businesses, private individuals, and various fishing wholesale distributors. This year looks to be even bigger and better than in years past.
We here at Surf City Ocean Pier, Inc. could use your help with this increasingly successful event. As this event continues to we are looking for both volunteers and sponsors. Monetary donations and/or donations of merchandise are always greatly appreciated. With your contribution to our competition/celebration, children from near and far will have a wonderful fun filled day at Surf City Ocean Pier. Your support will be greatly appreciated with our endeavors of the day that will be ahead of us on July 4, 2014.
There are currently twelve spots available for sponsors who donate $100 or more, to have their name or logo added to the children's t-shirts. Volunteers will also be needed to help supervise, answer questions, cut bait, identify fish and teach fishing basics to our young anglers, as well as help with serving lunches. For some of the children, this will be their very first fishing experience, and we hope to make it a memory that will last a lifetime.

Spotted Sea Trout: The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries
Size and creel limits for spotted seatrout, flounder, red drum and gray trout taken in joint and coastal waters are the same as the recreational limits for those species in adjacent inland waters.
Possession of spotted sea trout is currently prohibited by Proclamation FF-9-2014.
The Fisheries Director intends to reopen the recreational fishery June 15, 2014.

Roanoke River Record Rockfish
Electrofishing record rockfish, that is. This 59.5-pound#StripedBass (aka, "rockfish") is the largest striped bass that Wildlife Commission fisheries biologists have collected while electrofishing our coastal rivers.
Jeremy McCargo displays the big fish, which was collected, tagged and then released during fish-sampling work on the upper Roanoke River earlier this week on Tuesday (May 6).
