* STRIPERS: Casting artificials for striped bass throughout NC's mainland river systems; Topwater strategies; Trolling vs. casting
* FLOUNDER: Landing more and larger flounder; Trophy flounder tactics; Effectively utilizing live bait for flounder; Artificial lure strategies for flounder; Targeting flounder on nearshore wrecks and ledges
* KINGS: Catching, keeping, and utilizing live bait for smoker kings; Dead bait strategies for kings; Slow trolling insights and anchoring options; Following kings over the course of the season
* OFFSHORE: Offshore jigging vs. bait fishing; Anchoring and drifting over bottom structure; Best rigs for sea bass, snapper, and other bottom feeders; Nearshore (<25 miles) and offshore grouper (30+ miles)
* GULF STREAM: High speed Gulf Stream trolling; Conventional dead bait trolling; Strategies for finding feeding fish; Changing spreads and tactics to target the most available species

Capt. Jot Owens; Jot It Down Fishing Charters LLC

Fishin' Topsail

What a super nice day on the river yesterday; warm air, light winds and a good Striped Bass bite! The big one of the day was my personal biggest one of the year. This fish was as round as she was long and let me tell you one great fight on a PENN Conflict 2500 spinning reel with a PENN Regiment 7’ 8 to 15 class rod! It was hard to stop her runs a few times! The Striper was tagged and released in good health just after photo.

Wow! Great catch! Looks like Capt. Jot is ON THE FISH!

Topsail Island Surf Fishing Challenge

Topsail Island Surf Fishing Challenge:
Four Divisions: Bluefish, Flounder, Black Drum, and Sea Mullet

Entry Fee: $55 per angler before April 21; $65 per angler after April 21 (one entry fee gets you in all four divisions except Red Drum Calcutta)

Red Drum Calcutta: $25 per angler (Red Drum Calcutta is optional–it is offered as another way for tournament participants to win money)

Over $8,000 in cash and prizes (based on 200 entries)

Boundaries: Must fish from a Topsail Island Beach. No boats — No sound or pier fishing.
Three Weigh-in Locations: East Coast Sports, Jolly Roger Pier, and Seaview Pier.
Tournament Headquarters: under the big tent in the East Coast Sports parking lot

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Registration: Friday, May 2, from 2:00 pm – 11:00 pm (everyone must stop by Registration/Tournament HQ to receive their tournament wrist band and have the band placed upon their wrist–no exceptions!)


Fish Time Starts: Friday, May 2, 12:00 midnight.
Fish Time Ends: Sunday, May 4, 12:00 noon.

Awards Dinner: Sunday, May 4, from 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm at Tournament HQ (under the big tent in the East Coast Sports parking lot)

Awards Ceremony: Sunday, May 2, at 2:00 pm at Tournament HQ (under the big tent in the East Coast Sports parking lot)

Bluefish*: 1st–$1000; 2nd–$600; 3rd–$400; 4th–$250; 5th–$100

Flounder*: 1st–$1000; 2nd–$600; 3rd–$400; 4th–$250; 5th–$100

Black Drum*: 1st–$500; 2nd–$300; 3rd–$200; 4th–$100; 5th–$50

Sea Mullet*: 1st–$500; 2nd–$300; 3rd–$200; 4th–$100; 5th–$50

Capt. Jot Owens/Jot It Down Fishing Charters LLC

Kevin Lyon of Fort Collins, CO with a very nice 31" Cape Fear River Striped Bass.
