Topsail Island, A Short History

Local folklore claims the name, Topsail (pronounced Tops’ul), dates back to the 1700s when pirate ships roamed the coastal waters. The pirates hid their ships in the channels behind the island and waited to plunder passing merchant ships loaded with goods. Eventually the merchants became aware of this hiding place and began to watch for the tops of the pirates' sails peeking above the oak trees on the island — hence the name Topsail Island.

Topsail Island's first ocean pier, the Surf City Pier, was originally built in 1948. It has been owned and operated by the Lore family since 1973. Though it has weathered many storms (some better than others), Hurricane Fran destroyed it in 1996. It was totally rebuilt and reopened in August of 1997, looking much like it does today including a few additions. The Surf City Pier comes complete with large assortment of bait, fully stocked tackle shop, an eclectic collection of souvenirs fresh ground chuck burger's from the grill, and a screened in dining area. The pier is 937 feet long with a 40-foot octagon at the end. Also included are two large fish cleaning stations with fresh running water. Plenty of lighting for all night fishing. A well lit parking area.
We have added and improved our Outside Dining area so come have dinner with us. You will be glad you did.

Hi Topsail Island lovers. The local IGA Grocery Store in Surf City on Topsail Island, has implemented a program for "Locals Only". It involves selected unpublished "specials" that are not marked the "special price", and the customer must inform the cashier that he/she is buying the item as a "locals only special" and the cashier will ring up the special price! We proudly serve fresh, local seafood when seasonably available. And our dessert selections, including fresh cheesecake and key lime pie make a great finale to a great lunch or dinner. Selections change daily. Enjoy our wine and imported or domestic beer with your meal. Champagne and Spumante are also available. Kid's are always WELCOME at Mollie's. Choice of several entrees including the classic favorites, Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich and Mac & Cheese. Crayons and paper are provided to help pass the time.
