Capt. Rick Bennett's Rod-Man Charters Fishing Report

Hello from Surf City!

(quote)Hi Folks: Well until recently the weather has been next to lousy in the ocean and it is only somewhat better now. Looks like we will get a couple of nice days before a blow comes in this weekend. But, of course that can change. Inshore fishing is picking up with flounder and reds being the best producers. Some nice albacore were reported just off the beach today. Yesterday we caught some nice flounder and redfish.

Now here’s my report:

Inshore: As mentioned the reds and flounder are best bets right now. Plenty of mullet are around for live bait, or you can catch fish on Gulp SW…I like the New Penny Shrimp. As the waters cool look for black drum and sheepshead to bite better and better and of course the trout will be showing up soon.

Near Shore: From day to day there may or may not be some spanish biting, but that has been the scenario for most of the season. As mentioned some albies have shown up. Grays are hanging around the AR’s as are some bigger flounder. Bluefish are showing near the inlets in pretty good numbers and that too should only get better as the water cools.

Offshore: Seas have been pretty rough for several days now and offshore fishing has been limited. I don’t have any reports so I will not make any up. But when things calm down a bit look for kings in the 10 mile range along with some albies and bonito.

Gulfstream: Very few boats have made it out to the stream, but on the couple of fishable days, wahoo have been very active. Again, as the water cools look for the tuna bite to happen.

Fall fishing is getting into full swing. When the weather is cool in the morning and warm at mid-day, it’s time to get out and catch some of the great fall fishing. Don’t hestitate to contact me and I’ll tell what is and isn’t biting.

It’s hard to believe, but it is just over 90 days until the boat shows start and a month later my fishing schools in Raleigh and then in Wilmington will be on the calendar. It is not too early to sign up and guarantee you seat. For details: http://www.rodmancharters.com/2008-annual-fishing-school.htm

Let’s Go Fishing!!!

Big Reds are here-Current Adventure Charters

Hello from Surf City!

Fall fishing is in full swing and the big reds are here. Though we have had several weeks of bad weather and I had not been able to get out much, this week was much different.

This past weekend, I fished the Cape Fear Inshore Classic with my sweetie Karen and friend Brett. Fishing started out with a bang on Saturday with a nice speckled trout eating my zara spook topwater first thing. Though this fish didn't place in the tournament, it was a nice fish just the same. Most of the rest of the day was frustrating. It wasn't because the fish weren't biting, but that they we all too Big!!!

The slot limit for Redfish in this state (as most others) is 18-27". Well, this past weekend, the magic number seemed to be 27.5" and up. In two days of fishing, we released about 8 over slot fish, including one 30-inch plus fish. At one point, we had a school of 50-100 reds come up right beside the boat. We hooked 5 and landed 3 of them, all 28-inch plus fish.

We ended the day Saturday holding second place in the lady angler division of the tournament, but lost out on placing Sunday by 0.05lbs. The weather was great, the fishing is great and a good time was had by all.

It's time to go fishing. Call and book your trip today. Here are the openings that I have thru October.

This Sunday Sept. 30. Sunday Oct. 7th, 21st and 28th.

November is still pretty wide open.

Tight lines!!

SPOTS

Hello from Surf City!

SPOTS ARE BITING EVERYWHERE ON SURF CITY PIER! SOME TWO AT A TIME! THIS IS THE BIGGEST SPOT RUN OF THE FALL FISHING SEASON. EVERYTHING IS RIGHT! GOOD SURF, LIGHT NORTH EAST WIND, THE MOST BAIT FISH I HAVE EVER SEEN IN THE WATER! BEST BAIT FOR SPOTS?
BLOODWORMS

If spots aren't your forte, spanish and blues are plentiful and HUNGRY. So many spanish that they are biting bottom rigs and cut shrimp. Spanish are chasing bait right in the breakers! Now is the time. Get here before this run is over. Good Luck!

Surf City Pier ....... I SEE SPOTS!

Hello from Surf City! Spots are biting at Surf City! I was on the pier this evening, just looking, unfortunately I had no time to fish, and the spots were biting pretty good. Only occasionally were they two at a time, but there were a few doubles while I was there. The size is running from medium to large, but still not the big yellow bellies that we get in late fall. Bloodworms seem to be the bait of choice. Surf City Pier has plenty of worms, so we all can catch a bucket full! The spanish were thick also. We watched a school of "keepers" chasing bait and jumping out of the water, right in the breakers, so close you could have reached them from the surf! They were even biting bottom rigs baited with cut shrimp. It's been awhile since I have seen so many bait fish in the water. Seems like endless schools passing by the pier. Hundreds of finger mullets are being washed ashore with the waves, then scampering back into deeper water, only to be cast onto the beach by the next wave. An awesome site!

There are lots of reds schooling in the shallow flats off the waterway, and bites are plentiful. Try the Berkley Gulp Saltwater Jerk shad, 4 or 5 inch on a bare hook. Seems they are spooked by the weight. I prefer weedless hooks but I am sure any hook will work. Size 1 or 2. Go gettum!

Topsail Angler's Coastal Blog Fishing and Catching Report

Pompano fishing and a catching report

Hello from Surf City!

(quote) It’s one of the best tasting fish in this neck of woods, but you won’t find it at the grocery store. It’s not on the menu at any of our local restaurants. Don’t look for it at the fish markets. If you could find it, you would pay a small fortune for it.

The fish I speak of -- Florida pompano.

This prized fish is caught only on hook and line, and while they run in schools, they are not caught commercially in large numbers. An occasional pompano can be caught in the summer here any time the water temperature is above 70 degrees. However, they show up in the biggest numbers in September when the northern waters begin to cool down, and they head south to their winter home off the coast of Florida.

An average pompano weighs about a pound, with some of the bigger ones reaching more than two pounds. They feast on small crabs and shrimp, and the sand flea (sand mole crab) is their favorite meal.

They can be caught in the surf or from the pier. Anglers catch them in the shallow water right at the base of the breakers where they hang out waiting for the sand fleas to be washed out in the surf.

To catch them, most anglers use a surf rod with a two- or three-hook bottom rig. Get a small shovel and dig up some sand fleas in the shallow water on the beach. Some folks use rat wire (hardware cloth) to sift them out, but running your hand through the loosened sand works just as well.

I like to use a #2 or #4 khale hook to hold the sand flea and about a 3 ounce sinker to hold the bottom. Cast the rig out just past the breaking waves and hold on. Believe it or not, they put up a great fight for a small fish, especially if you hook up with two at once.

Sometimes you can fill a small cooler on a single tide; at others you might only catch a mouthful. In either case, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this tasty fish!

Catching report

The bite is starting to pick up with the cooling water temps. Should only get better over the next few weeks, Flounder fishing has been real good lately especially near the creek mouths and near the inlets on the last of the falling tide. There have been some reports of some nice specks being caught up on the northern part of the island. Puppy drum continue to bite in the creeks and waterway.

In the surf some nice pompano are being caught as well as an occasional drum and a few specks. The Grey trout are chewing on the ledges and hard bottoms just outside the inlets. Spanish fishing should continue to be great for the next few weeks until the water cools into the low 70’s. The piers have reported nice catches of spots and mullet especially after dark. They also are seeing some nice Pompano caught.

The near shore king mackerel bite recently returned to the near shore waters with several nice ones being caught on the island’s three piers as well as boats trolling in the 1-3 miles range. The gag groupers have moved close to shore and can be found in the 12+ mile range.

Fall is in the air! I hope you catch ’em up.

(end quote)

Tropical Storm? Not Here!

Hello from Surf City!
I don't know where the weather channel was getting their information, but the storm they have been talking about wasn't around here. It missed us. The weather channel was at North Topsail Beach and was reduced to showing film of the beach houses that were damaged by hurricane Ophelia two years ago. The beach front houses have since been condemned. Anyway, we are thankful that the storm has missed us. Ok, now to my fishing report. I made a short visit to Surf City Pier and saw some nice black drum, probably about three or four pounds each, a few mullets, and yes, a few nice spots. The yellow butterflies are everywhere, and the spots are starting to show up. The few anglers that were fishing, were excited about catching a few spots. They are not showing up two at a time yet, but there are some being caught. Big sharks are being caught from the piers and in the surf. A friend said a six footer bumped his leg as he was wading in knee deep water casting a jig for flounder. Needless to say, he fished from the shore the rest of his trip. Inside fishing has been good with keeper flounder and speckled trout being caught near the inlets. Red drum are holding around grass lines and the flats off the ICW. Lady fish are biting near the turning bridge. Folks are saying they haven't seen this many ladyfish in a long time. I haven't heard of sheepshead being caught around the turning bridge. Maybe it's too early. I really don't know much about sheepshead. If anyone has any info about when and where, let us know. OK, so fishing is picking up as the water and the weather gets cooler. Come on down and wet a line. I don't think you will get "blown away" unless it's by the fish your are going to catch. See ya on the beach!

Till next time....

Rod-Man report by Capt. Rick Bennett

Bass Pro Shops

Hello from Surf City! Rod-Man report by Capt. Rick Bennett

Hi Folks, The temperatures while not cool have moderated. The persistent northerly winds combined with the moderate temps have begun the fall fishing season. It’s only started and the best is yet to come. This will be the time of the year to catch trophy trout, reds and flounder on our favorite artificial bait…GULP SW. I have stocked up and I am ready to go catch them.

Now here’s my report:

Inshore: Redfish are biting well on the falling tide. Best spots are the inlets, the docks on the waterway and the creeks. The flounder bite is steadily improving with the most and best fish in the ocean near the artificial and natural reefs. Jigging GULP on the bottom or fishing live bait will catch these fish. Trout are biting in the river on the rising tide.

Near Shore: We have had a ball this year shark fishing and releasing all we have caught. We have seen some beautiful sharks including but not limited to: blacktips, dusky, bull, hammerheads, lemon and spinners. The spanish bite has finally become reliable. We lucked up last week and caught a small sailfish (about 4+ feet) while spanish fishing using a bird rig. We released the fish in the water without a picture except for the ones in our memories of his 6 jumps. Gray trout are biting mainly on the rising tide. A few bluefish have started to show.

Offshore: Kings are biting from 10-25 miles out. A few sails are still around. Around the AR’s, amberjack and barracuda will give you some exciting action.

Gulfstream: Wahoo are still biting well in the steam. Nice mahi are around as well.

The Labor Day weekend is over and for many the serious time of the year for fishing has begun. Fall fishing can be very exciting and rewarding. Make plans to get out on the water soon and catch some…..

LET’S GO FISHING!!!

The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday

Bass Pro Shops

Hello from Surf City! OK, another post that is not about fishing. But this is important to me, and after all, it is my blog. If they know of him at all, many folks think Ben Stein is just a quirky actor/comedian who talks in a monotone. He's also a very intelligent attorney who knows how to put ideas and words together in such a way as to sway juries and make people think clearly. Please read it. I think it is worth the time.
Thank you.
Johnny

Herewith at this happy time of year, a few confessions from my
beating heart: I have no freaking clue who Nick and Jessica are. I see them on the
cover of People and Us constantly when I am buying my dog biscuits and kitty
litter. I often ask the checkers at the grocery stores. They never know who
Nick and Jessica are either. Who are they? Will it change my life if I know
who they are and why they have broken up? Why are they so important?

I don't know who Lindsay Lohan is either, and I do not care at all
about Tom Cruise's wife.

Am I going to be called before a Senate committee and asked if I am a
subversive? Maybe, but I just have no clue who Nick and Jessica are.

If this is what it means to be no longer young. It's not so bad.

I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And
it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit
up, bejeweled trees Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel
discriminated against. That's what they are: Christmas trees.

It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, "Merry Christmas" to me.
I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In
fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters
celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there
is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in
Malibu . If people want a creche, it's just as fine with me as is the
Menorah a few hundred yards away.

I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think
Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people
who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I
have no idea where the concept came from that America is an explicitly
atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution, and I don't like it
being shoved down my throat.

Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that
we should worship Nick and Jessica and we aren't allowed to worship God as
we understand Him?

I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too.

But there are a lot of us who are wondering where Nick and Jessica
came from and where the America we knew went to.

In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this
is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it's not funny, it's
intended to get you thinking.

Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and
JaneClayson asked her "How could God let something like this Happen?"
(regarding Katrina)

Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She
said, "I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for
years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our
government and to get out of our lives.

And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out.
How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He
leave us alone?"

In light of recent events...terrorists attack, school shootings, etc.
I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body
found recently) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we
said OK.

Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school. The Bible
says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as
yourself. And we said OK.

Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when
they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might
damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide). We said an
expert should know what he's talking about and we said OK.

Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why
they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill
strangers, their classmates, and themselves.

Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it
out. I think it has a great deal to do with "WE REAP WHAT WE SOW."

Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why
the world's going to hell.

Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the
Bible says.

Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail and they spread like
wildfire but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people
think twice about sharing.

Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely
through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school
and workplace.

Are you laughing?

Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many
on your address list because you're not sure what they believe, or what they
will think of you for sending it.

Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us
than what God thinks of us.

Pass it on if you think it has merit. If not then
just discard it... no one will know you did. But, if you discard this thought
process, don't sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in.

Till next time....

Topsail Angler Catching Report

Bass Pro Shops

Hello from Surf City! Thanks to Mike aka Topsail Angler for this "catching" report. Mike writes a column in the Topsail Advertiser weekly. He also publishes a fishing blog online at http://www.hampsteadfishing.blogspot.com/

The recent slightly cooler temperatures has many anglers anticipating the great fishing that fall weather produces. While fall weather hasn’t quite arrived yet, the recent northeast winds have produced a slight cooling of the inshore water. This seems to have stimulated the bite!

Inshore there have been some excellent catches of red and black drum, flounder and sheepshead. A few speckled trout are being reported, I even saw a few caught in the surf on Labor Day. Some nice pompano are also being caught in the surf.

From the piers and near shore boat fishing anglers are seeing large schools of mostly small Spanish mackerel with some nice size ones from time to time. The blue fish, croakers, spots and specks are being reported also. The nearshore gray trout bite has been strong with many anglers catching them by vertically jigging silver or gold diamond jigs.

The kings are still spread out but are biting anywhere from 50 feet of water on out. Mahi are still in the 15 mile and out range as are the grouper.

Tight lines to all!

Thanks Mike!

Till next time....

Topsail Island Update

Bass Pro Shops

Hello from Surf City! Small spanish and blues off Surf City Pier this week, along with two kings landed. Large pompano (up to 3 lbs) are hitting sand fleas and cut shrimp, and a few specks on live shrimp and grubs. At night when it's cooler, a few spots are starting to hit on short runs of 30 minutes or so. The sea mullet bite is picking up at night on fresh shrimp and sand fleas.

On Sea View pier, lots and lots of spanish are hitting diamond jig rigs bounced off the bottom, but most are under the 12 inch minimum. Some nice blues are biting gotcha plugs and hitting bottom rigs baited with cut bait. A couple of nice trout have been reported, and one 5 or 6 pounder was brought to the top of the water, but couldn't be landed with the dip net. Sea View also reported some big spade fish and a few keeper flounder. A few spots and sea mullets at night.

The surf is giving up a few flounder, and red drum, and even some (wait for it, here it comes.....) spanish are being jigged up from just behind the breakers. Boats are catching kings up to 10 lbs about 50 yards from shore. Inside is still producing some reds in the shallows and along grass lines, and speckled trout near the inlets and in the mouth of deep water tidal creeks.

Go gettum!

Till next time....

Topsail Island / Sneads Ferry Fishing Report from The Fisherman's Post

Paul Horning Jr. and W. Otto Sywolski caught and released this black drum on Figure Eight Island in the surf on the falling tide using bloodworms.

Bass Pro Shops

Hello from Surf City!
Chris, of East Coast Sports, reports that kings are feeding right off the beaches. The largest kings, however, are further off the beach. Some sailfish are mixed in as close to the beach as Honeymoon Rock. Live baits should attract attention from both the kings and sails.

Boats are still finding a few dolphin around Christmas Rock. Both cigar minnow and ballyhoo baits should be too much for the dolphin to resist.

Wahoo have pushed inshore of the Gulf Stream due to the high temperatures, and anglers have landed several around 20 miles offshore recently.

Surf and pier anglers are landing a typical summertime mixed bag of whiting, pompano, and other fish. Some big sharks are also providing exciting battles for anglers targeting them.

Inshore, the ladyfish, flounder, and red drum are on the feed in the sounds. Carolina-rigged finger mullet will attract attention from all three species.

Wayne, of Sea View Pier, reports that in the early mornings and late afternoons anglers are landing some speckled trout on live shrimp baits. Some flounder are also falling for live shrimp fished on the bottom. At night, live shrimp are producing red and black drum. Bluefish are biting a variety of baits. Anglers casting diamond jigs are landing a few spanish mackerel.

Vinita, of Surf City Pier, reports that anglers are decking some slot-sized and larger red drum. Live and cut shrimp are both drawing strikes from the drum. After dark, some whiting are biting the shrimp, too. Live baits are producing some keeper flounder. Plug casters are hooking up with a few bluefish and spanish mackerel.

Robin, of Jolly Roger Pier, reports that spanish mackerel are all around the pier, but they’re feeding on glass minnows and are frequently reluctant to strike lures large enough for anglers to cast. When they decide to bite, anglers are hooking the mackerel on diamond jig/tube lure rigs. A good number of keeper flounder are coming over the rails, and most are falling for live baits. Anglers are also catching a few flatfish on Gulp baits and bucktails. Bottom fishermen are catching some fat pompano (1-2.5 lbs.) and whiting (1 lb. and larger).

Ricky, of Speckled Specialist Charters, reports that speckled trout are still feeding well in the New River and nearby waters. Billy Bay Halo shrimp in white and pink are the top artificial lures, but it’s hard to beat live shrimp when the fish get picky.
Red drum are chasing bait in the same areas as the trout, but they are feeding on the banks instead of along the channel drop-offs. Anglers should cast topwater plugs and spinnerbaits to the banks and shallows to hook up with the drum.

Eric, of New River Marina, reports that speckled trout fishing is picking up, particularly near the inlet. Soft plastic baits and live shrimp or finger mullet will all draw attention from the trout. Red drum are feeding in the ICW and creeks off the New River. The reds are falling for white 4” Gulp shrimp fished on spinnerbaits or beneath popping corks. The flounder bite is still solid, and anglers are hooking up with the flatfish near the inlet and throughout the ICW. They’ll take an interest in Carolina-rigged live baits or spinnerbaits. A few sheepshead are still feeding around the 172 Bridge, but the black drum bite has slowed down. Fiddler crabs are top sheepshead baits, and they should be fished close to the bridge pilings for best results. Spanish mackerel fishing near the inlet and along the beach is excellent right now. Trolled Clarkspoons should draw plenty of bites from the spanish, along with some bluefish.

The high temperatures have the kings feeding further off the beach than in previous weeks. Live baits or dead cigar minnows will produce good results on the kingfish.
Gag grouper are still feeding at structure as close as 8 miles off the beach, with reds a bit further out (20+ miles). Grouper will bite a wide variety of baits, and spanish sardines and cigar minnows are top choices.

Speckled Trout, up to 5 lbs at North Topsail Beach.

Bass Pro Shops

Hello from Surf City! I am hearing that the speckled trout are really thick at Sea View Pier, and they are in the surf all the way to the inlet. I would like to get up that way and check it out. Maybe in a few days. There are a lot of reds in the flats off the ICW. They are hitting gulp baits as well as live baits, finger mullets, and even baby croakers. The flounder bite in the ocean continues to get better, if you can find a spot that doesn't have sharks cruising the beach. I have never seen sharks like this right in the breakers. Must be a lack of food for them farther out. Flounder fishing in the waterway (ICW) and tidal creeks is still good. Fish the deep holes with finger mullets or carolina rigged gulp saltwater. For some real doormat flounder, go to snows cut at Carolina Beach. Water is full of them, so I am hearing. Go gettum!

Fishing Saltwater in Southeast North Carolina
Capt. Lewis Emery Tails Up Charters www.Tailsupcharters.com
Redfish----Grouper-----Black Drum are Biting
Redfishing was super hot last week. We pulled in 33 Redfish last Thursday. Unfortunately it cooled down yesterday though. We only had a couple. The full moon and that hard rain is what I’m blaming. It should pick back up at the end of this week though. I’ve had several people come into shop this week and last that have caught many of the redfish around docks. They were using live mullet on a heavier duty Carolina rigs. We’ve been catching our fish on live bait also, but we’ve been using float rigs primarily. We have also been using D.O.A. C.A.L. Series paddle tails. They mimic a mullet very well, plus they’re tough enough where the tails don’t get bit off by the pinfish every other cast. That’s Pat Lewis with a 30” Redfish caught on live mullet with a float rig. Her husband (Ed Lewis) is in the back ground fighting a 3lb Trout. read more
Flounder----Spanish----
Trout are still here. We have caught our share these past couple of weeks. I’ve caught them on small mullet, live shrimp, topwaters, MirrOlures, X-Raps, and some Yozuri Fingerlings. Early mornings I’ve started out with topwaters, then switched to something sub-surface. When the sun gets really bright then we’ve fished the live bait. We’ve been catching 12”trout to 24”inchers lately. Incoming or high falling tides are always good tides when trying to target them. The Elizabeth River and Battery Island are really good places right now with the right wind. That’s Kevin Smith with a 20” Trout caught on a Super Spook Jr. read more

Pre Labor Day Action
Flounder, Spanish, Blues, Red Drum, Speckled Trout, King Mackerel, Sharks, and a decent showing of blow toads for you bottom fishermen. That about sums it up for the last few days.

The inlets have been feeding frenzies for the blues, spanish, and sharks lately. Lots of bait has made easy pickings for 'toothy critters'. Trolling spoons and casting jigs for the blues and spanish and meat on the bottom for the sharks.

The flounder continue to bite well around any deep structure on slack tides. Larger 5'-7' mullet minnows are working the best. Even medium size menhaden are effective. Too small of a bait leads to lots of lizard fish, short bass, toads, and ribbonfish.
