Trout Street Access, Wrong Information

It seems that I have posted some erroneous information concerning Trout Street. My source was sure he was correct, but I failed to verify this with the town of Topsail Beach before I posted the information. A message on the message board this morning posted by Laurel King denies that Trout Street has been considered for closure. I have included her response below. I apologize for any inconvenience I have caused the town of Topsail Beach.

Please let it be known that The Town of Topsail Beach is NOT considering, and never has considered, closing the Trout Ave. sound access. Plans are under consideration for improving the access, but there is nothing about it on tonight's Board of Commissioners' meeting agenda. AGAIN, THE TOWN IS NOT GOING TO CLOSE THE TROUT AVE ACCESS!

end post:

I am happy this fishing spot will still be open to the public. I am sure the other anglers that fish there will be happy to hear this good news.

Trout St. Fishing Hole Closure

I received an email from Chris at East Coast Sports today concerning the closure of one of my favorite trout holes...It seems that the city of Topsail Beach is considering closing access to the end of Trout St. Those of you who fish there, and even you anglers that have never fished there, need to speak up and let them know how you feel about all the closures that are taking place now. It is getting harder and harder to find a place to fish if you don't have access to a boat. Please call or email the powers that be, and let them know how you feel about this situation.

Here is the email........

"All Fishermen,

It has come to our attention that the town of Topsail Beach is attempting to close off the end of Trout Street to any and all access to the public. Most people know this as a great fishing spot for land based fishermen and is located close to the inlet. If some opposition is not put before the town this public fishing access will be closed for good. The town of Topsail Beach will be voting on the ordinance on Wednesday night. If you wish to speak out and let the town know how you feel. Please e-mail the town manager Jim Carter at townmanager@topsailbeach.org or call the town hall at (910) 328-5841. You may also want to go to the town meeting which will be at the Topsail Beach Town hall at 7:00 pm on Wednesday the 14th. Please help us keep this wonderful fishing opportunity open to the public.

Thank You for your Time

Capt. Chris Medlin

Thanks to Chris for bringing this to our attention. I have been sick, but I am going to try to be at this meeting Wednesday night. Please join us and let your feelings be known.

Reds Still Here

I heard from an angler who was fishing in the inside. From what he told me, the reds are still here. This angler made a "statement". And what a "statement" it was. He and his fishing partner caught 48.... that's 40 plus 8, reds in, get this, only two and a half hours! That's almost a fish every three minutes. And another thing that makes this a fantastic fishing trip, was the fact that 47 of these reds were in the slot! That means that they were all over 18 inches long! (except one) Wow! I have got to get the kayak out. Fish in the afternoon in shallow water flats. that's all the information I could get. Go get them!

New Flounder Size Limit

Attention everyone! NCDMF has enacted an new size limit for flounder caught in the ocean. The new size limit is now 14 1/2 inches effective immediately. If you are luck enough to catch one in this cold snap we are having, don't get caught short. The old 14 inch limit is still in effect for inside waters. Creel is still limited to 8 fish per day. Personally, I am glad to see this increase. I tried all year to catch a flat fish that was over 14 inches. This year it won't be a problem. The only thing is they will all be 14 3/8 inches long. (humor)

Speckled Are Still Around

I talked with a friend today and he told me that speckled trout are still in the creeks. He found some deep holes today and caught several using Gulp Saltwater Shrimp (new penny), fished very, very, slowly. He also caught a few red drum, all within the slot. All the reds were released. There are still some fish around, and they can be enticed into biting. So if you are tough enough to stand these cold Northeast winds, get out on the water and do battle with the elements as well as the fish.

The weather looks good for a fishing trip. Clear skys and lows in the 20s and highs in the low 50s are forecast through the weekend. Winds will be out of the North at 3 to 9 mph. This wind isn't too bad, and I may take the kayak out. Wish me luck!

Weather Improving

The weather is better, it's warm today. Donna and I got out on the beach for about an hour this morning for a walk. I had on a light jacket, but would have been comfortable in shirt sleeves. Donna's mom is still under the weather, requiring daily visits, so I haven't had time to fish any. I haven't seen anyone on the pier or the surf, and no one has been out behind the house in a kayak. I hope to make it out soon.

It's 57 degrees outside now, and the week ahead looks good with no rain through Sunday. The lows should be in the middle to low 30's, and highs in the high 40's to low 50's. Winds are out of the west at about 5 mph. Surf temps are in the low 50's, depending on where you check it.

Hopefully, I will be able to get out in the kayak soon, before the weather turns bad again. If anyone out there has been fishing on the inside lately, drop me an email and let me know what you caught.

Cold and Windy

I still haven't been fishing. But from what I have been able to find out, there isn't much going on in the surf. Too cold, too windy. Fishing on the inside has slowed a bit also. I hope to get out in the kayak soon. Still dreamin'! LOL

Slow

I haven't fished since last post. Donna's mom Ms. Lee is still in the hospital and migraines have been bad. I have heard that fishing in the surf is dead. Fishing in the inside has slowed a bit, although a few specks are still being caught in deep holes. Puppy drum, small ones, can sometimes be found in the early afternoons after the shallows have been warmed by the sun. I have had at least three dozen mud minnows in a cooler on the back porch for at least three weeks. I didn't know they would live that long. I read today that live shrimp can be kept alive out of water, if they are put on a cloth covered platform in a cooler with ice in the bottom. Article said they would live throughout the day as long as they didn't fall into the ice. Once they are removed and hooked they will become active in just a few seconds. This is the way I keep mud minnows in the summer time and it works well with them. I am going to try this technique with shrimp this summer.
