Picking up

Well, I got this piece of junk computer running one more time. The fishing is picking up. When the wind lays down enough to cast there are some nice va mullet (1 to 2 lb range) being caught. Small flounder, mostly under 14 inches hitting mud minnows and finger mullets, as well as cut shrimp. Sand fleas, my favorite mullet bait, are still hard to find. Mostly have to dig for them. Saw a one pound black drum and several nice spot caught on the pier this afternoon. When water is clear in the mornings, small blue fish are being caught on gotcha plugs. Still waiting for that south wind that will push the warm water from the gulf stream to the beaches on Topsail Island. That's when fishing will really pick up. In the backwaters, behind the island, anglers are catching puppy drum, trout and flounder. I am hearing a lot about the new Berkley Gulp Saltwater lures. Anglers are saying they catch more on them than the real thing. They are supposed to put a lot of smell in the water. I'll give them a try.
Until next time,

Spring is here

Haven't posted in a while. My computer is about to find a new home at the bottom of the ocean. It's running now, but who knows for how long. Fishing is picking up. Virginia mullet and whiting can be caught in the surf as well as the piers. Blues are starting to show up. A giant chopper blue, 24 lbs. was caught by a king angler from the end of the Surf City pier. Smaller blues are being caught on Got-cha plugs. Speckled trout are still in the water. Puppy drum are starting to show up in the surf, and they are schools of them in the waters behind the Topsail Island. The kayak-ers are making some good catches of trout, flounder, and puppy drum in creeks and waterways. Check out Herring's Outdoor Sports if you don't have a kayak. Their rentals are really reasonable .

Mullet Good!

The ocean water is warming and with the warmer water, comes the virginia mullets. I am told that the night time bite is good. but most now are small. There are a few larger ones mixed in. There also have been a few speckled trout caught from Surf City Pier. Of course the puffers or toads, are still out there, with a sting ray or a skate here and there. I am still waiting for my first mullet from the surf.

Piers, Mullets, Puffers, and Stingrays

Boat for sale, read about it after my fishing report.

Water is warming up, 61 to 63 degrees, depending on which source you use. Puffers are in the surf in good numbers. If you like these fish, get to the shore while they are here. Va Mullets are being caught here and there from the surf, but the piers seem to be producing better right now. Heard a rumor, can't confirm, that an angler caught over a hundred Va mullets fishing all night from Surf City Ocean Pier. Still trout and puppy drum are being caught by boating anglers in the sound side of Topsail Island. Winds have been out of the north and north east last week, slowing the warming of the ocean water. We need some good south wind along with these sunny days we have been having, to warm the water a few more degrees.
NOTE: Sorry I haven't posted lately. Getting used to some new meds, making me feel really tired and weak. Sould be getting acustomed to them in another week or so. Thanks for checking my blog. Hopefully I will be out more and have something new and good to tell you.

Still have the boat for sale. 16 foot KenCraft well boat. Great for setting nets and shallow water fishing. 25 hp Evinrude, (30 hp Johnson powerhead) in good running condition.
